What year is your truck and how many miles?
Mainly city driving or highway? Loaded or just you?

You might have a clogged cat, the passenger one is being replaced on my truck. Prior to a tune up and major tranny work I was getting 14 mpg in town and 18 on the highway.

i get around 16 mpg, and i have the 4.9, check out your fuel filter, and air filter. Those can be gas mileage robbers..

Re: f- 150 5.4 gas mileage

I have a 2002 f-150 with a 5.4 with only 15000 miles and get from 11.5 to 13 mpg. What a tank! It's never been able to get decent mileage. The dealer won't even talk about it. Any suggestions?

man, I get about 10 mpg towing my trailer. on my 01 supercrew with 35000 on it, i am getting about 14 to 15 mpg. That's not beating on it, if i stomp it, around 13. I'd suggest dual exhaust, a k & n, and a tune up with good plugs, not the cheap ones.

Re: f- 150 5.4 gas mileage

Just remember that in most places (larger cities) they use "reformulated" gasoline, and your economy will be 10%-20% LOWER because of it. Also, gearing and driving style have alot to do with it too. A 4x4 with steep gears will be able to pull a heavy load easily, but it will use more fuel every day too.

What do you mean 'reformulated'?

Re: f- 150 5.4 gas mileage

Reformulated gasoline contains a higher Oxygen content than "normal". this is achieved in a few different ways, but basically you dilute the raw refined fuel, so you lower it's energy content.

This provides slightly lower tailpipe emissions (at idle), but causes you to actually burn 10-20% MORE fuel to go exactly the same distance, so overall emissions actually GO UP. AND you spend more $$ to drive that distance.

Smart isn't it?
