howling sound

My front passenger wheel is howling only when I turn to the right. I heard that could be the wheel bearing. I'm planning on changing the old cross-drilled rotors that are warped soon. I want to do easy stuff first. Is there a way I can tell if the bearings are totally bad or have life left at all? The test to check the wheel bearing (and not the ball joints) is to jack up the car and move the wheel from side to side or is it up and down?

Re: howling sound

jack it up and spin the wheel check for any wobble at all. But the way u described it sounds like its time for a new wheel bearing!

Re: howling sound

If I have to replace the bearing what is the easiest way to do it? Isn't just replacing the wheel bearing a pain in the ass? Would it be easier to replace the hub assembly from a known good car?

Re: howling sound

change the bearing. Just take out the whole knuckle, it's not hard. Take the caliper and caliper bracket off,hub nut, lower ball joint nut, tie rod end nut, uper comtrol arm nut, and if you have a pickle fork it'll be easier to seperate the joints but they can be seperated w/ a hammer as long as you protect the threads w/ a nut or something just to break them loose. If you get a decent manual on your car it'll giver you instructions and some pics too probably.

Re: howling sound

OK... I'll check it out. I think I still have print outs from the Helms from the upper ball joint procedure which has everything on it. Maybe I'll just save up for some new struts, brake rotors, pads and do it all at once while it's apart.

Re: howling sound

it would be good to do it all at once so you don't have to keep tearing the front end apart everyother week or so when something else wears out. I'd replace balljoints and everything if you can so that you don't have any problems in the near future.

I did the ball joints about a year ago. The ride is no where near as bad as it was prior to the replacements. I'm going cheap. This CRX is no prize winner...

one hand on top of the tire, one hand on bottom of tire and shake it. if it does... wheel bearing. if you put one hand left, one right and do it side to side, then thats most likely something bad in the front end. (tie rods etc...) just look at whats loose and binding

sounds exactly like a wheel bearing. howling, only does it when you turn the wheel one way... does it get louder at higher speeds? Id go ahead and replace it now. its not all that hard, and if you put it off, you could end up ruining the spindle and setting yourself even farther back. so yea, take off the knuckle like homeboy said and get that shit replaced.

Re: howling sound

I did the test and it didn't wobble or shake or nothing. I spun the wheel and it spins straight as an arrow. What gives? It gets loud at high speed. I lowered my car a bit more a couple of months ago... could this be a camber issue? I guess I'll have to mess with it. (Note* Every time I start doing car stuff I either break something or fuck up my hands... ugh!)

Re: howling sound

Update: I know this is an old thread but I didn't want to start a new one. I can't believe I've been living with this since mid-April... Anyway, I had a shop look at it, and it's the REAR passenger side wheel bearing (not the front). My hearing is bad though... They had to order the part and it'll cost $155 installed on Tuesday.
