Hello,
I'm not trying to scare you, but if your not a mechanic, take the quad 4 to a certified mechanic. These engines are GM's worst design and are a Pain in the a$$ to time. Not an easy motor to work on. I love GM cars, when i go to the auction and see a grand am or any other GM vehicle with a quad 4, i close the hood and walk away.

Good luck,
Sellncars

I don't know if they're the same or not, but I'm currently doing the head gasket on a 1994 quad-4 SOHC. These things are a pain in the A$$!!! I believe the part you are talking about being in the way of removing the timing cover is the upper engine mount. There were 3 bolts securing that to the timing cover on mine. I just decided to remove the engine for other reasons related to poor mechnic work in the past on this vehicle (its not mine). If you are having trouble removing those bolts, its because:

A:There isn't much room. This one, all I could get on it was a 15mm box wrench...no room for sockets or anything else.

B: To compound the problem, the weight of the engine is on those bolts, which is why you can't get them off.

C: I hope yours are not like the ones I work with....rusted.

Once I got the engine out by removing all the other mount bolts and using a hoist, I had a crack at those 3 bolts. Only one came out with an impact wrench. The other 2 would not even come out with the impact wrench, they stripped. I ended up drilling inot the heads of the bolts, beating them with a hammer, and using a hammer and chisel for a long time in order to knock them loose. The timing tensioner is a pain to work with as well...have fun. It can be done, but its a royal pain.
