1983 C10 Question

Just a quick question I have a 1983 C10 pickup with a 350 in it. Im just learning about engines. But I notice it knocks and pings alot. I even put in premium gas 93, and added some octane booster, but it did nothing. someone told me my compression ratio was too high to run pump gas. But another person said I could use 87 regular. It has 11.5:1 Compression. Thanks,
Shane

Re: 1983 C10 Question

um... try checking the timing to make sure its right where its supposed to be. you might have to retard the timing a little bit to prevent pre-ignition or "pinging" from occuring. or lol be like me and cut a big ass hole in the exhaust so you can't hear the pinging and it doesnt bother you then lol. but anyways, i have a 350 with a 4 barrel holley on it and it doesnt ping at all really... i use pump octane 87 gasolene and it runs great without any additives, although i use acetone anyways, because im wierd like that. i would think that changing the timing or at least having it set correctly and using pump octane 87 gasolene will probably solve your problem. Remember if you decide to change the timing that you have to unhook the vaccuum advance hose and plug it with something like maybe a bolt or a screw so that you dont get an incorrect timing setting. make damn sure you retighten the bolt that holds the distributor in position really tight or it might come loose like mine did and youre going down the road backfiring thru the carb because the distributor decided to turn one way or the other lol.

That obviously can not be a stock engine with that kind of compression. My brother had a 383 stroker with Keith Black flat top pistons and that thing only had 10.5:1 compression and was putting out approx 425 hp.

Actually it isn't it's an LT-1 crate engine with a 400 crank a .660 roller cam, and dome shape pistons. Did your brother put in a special kind of gas or did he put in 93 or lower??
