My Brothers Van Just stopped running.it's getting gas but not sure if it's getting spark. I believe it's the timming belt. could there be something else we are over looking? we don't want to take apart the motor if we don't have to. it's has a new alt, a new coil and fuel filter plug and plug wires. any help would be nice.

Hi.What year is this van?? It should not have a timeing belt.It would have a timeing gear and chain.Pull a sparkplug out of the engine,And connect it to a plug wire,Ground the plug to the engine and crank the engine over,See if you are getting spark.If not,It might be a crank sensor.Buy a Hanes manual,Or Chiltons repair manual.The books have alot of info you need.Good luck.Diesel 1962

Why do you think that it's a timing belt (chain)?

You need 3 things for an explosion: air, fuel, and spark.

- Air: Air is fairly basic. There are sensors that help with the metering of air to determin air/fuel ratios. But is something was wrong with those, it still should start but possibly run poorly. I'd say you can probably rule out an air problem.

- Spark: The above poster's post will test for spark. You shouldn't have to check all spark plugs at first, just the front 3 initially since they are easy to get to. If you are getting spark on all three, you can be fairly certain that you are getting spark on the rear ones as well (although not guaranteed). 3/6 would at least sound like the engine was trying to start.

If you aren't getting a spark, there could be a variety of different reasons. We can cross that road when we get there.

- Fuel: You say it's getting fuel. How do you know? Did you do a fuel pump pressure check at the test port? What was the reading? After you crank it for a while and pull the plugs, are they wet (indicating fuel was being injected into the cylinder?

Also, you didn't mention it but is your MIL lit or any trouble codes stored?

not to sure what year the van is. we took off the air filter and can see fuel being sprayed in the carb. it has a spark but not every time around. everything on the motor is new since December. where is the crank sensor at. it's my brothers van and im just trying to help and he don't have the money to put it in the shop. like i said everything on the outside of the motor is new.

Hello.The crank sensor would be located behind the balancer.That is where your pully is at.It would help if you bought a repair manual.It would save alot of time.You said you saw fuel being sprayed into carb?? I am guessing it is throttle body injection. So that telles me that it is an early model van,As mine has direct port fuel injection(1997 model).Get a manual and study it.If you cannot buy one,Go to a library,They should have repair manuals there.Good luck..Diesel 1962

i have a 1998 venture(cousin to silouette)its not getting gas i replaced everything except the electrical box behind drivers seat that fuel pump plugs into. car is recovering from a flood could that box be the problem being though the insude of the van got wet? does that box protect the pump? if not what should i do next? can i replace the wiring harness to the pump and b ok or should i replace the pump?

If it were recovering from a flood, I would definitally check out box. Logic suggests something hanging off the bottom of a minivan would normally be exposed to being wet, so it should be waterproof, but we are talking GM engineering. One good way I use is turn the key to the on position and listen for a faint "whirr" sound that should shut off. Ive been told this is the fuel pump pressurising.

Id check with a multimeter:

Fuel Pump (in tank) voltage. Make sure its getting volts. If not trace back with the resistance scale (ohms) to ensure your wires arent shorted out or broken until you reach the connector that goes into the van. Ensure the pins are making good contacts, and clean them up a bit if needed. Still no voltage at pump? Keep tracing for water damage. Eventually you'll reach the fuel pump relay (which I still dont know where the hell it is! lol) and check that to see if it functions properly. That failing, keep following that hot wire.

Now.. If your at that fuel pump and it does have voltage In the RUN position, but the pump doesnt push any fuel, check the filter and lines. If they are good, then your pump may have bit the dust..

The fuel pump relay is located in the fuse block under the hood.
