Whats the difference between '87 CRX and '88 CRX
I have an '87 CRX Si and i can find damn near zero mods for it. Ive looked every where and the only thing i can find is a monza exhaust and some no name brand tower tie bars. Dont even get me started on cosmetic mods. I was wondering what, or rather how big, the difference between the 87 and 88 really is. Is the body basically the same dimensions, thus allowing 88 body kits on the 87? Just things like that. I know that the engine is different. 88 is the first year of the VTEC, while i have the PGM-FI engine. This question is primarily about cosmetics, but if you guys know of any performance mods that fit without too much trouble, that would be nice too.

Re: Whats the difference between '87 CRX and '88 CRX
The only similarities between the 2gens of CRX is the CRX name. The lug bolt pattern is the same, and the window crank handles will work but that's about it.
The 2g CRX bumpers are a little wider, the front end is shorter (so no, the hood won't fit), headlights are different, body contours are completely different, not even the seats will fit in a 1g (I tried that already). But, you can make anything work on your car with enough Bondo. One free mod you can do is to pull off the front bumper then rip out all of the plastic tubing leading up to the air filter box, then open up the air filter box and remove the plate in the bottom. Put the bumper back on and you're ready to go! |

Re: Whats the difference between '87 CRX and '88 CRX
There are plenty of motor-swapping possibilities, as well... Although, you cannot swap the d16 from a 88-91 into the 87, but with a mount kit from Hassport, you can drop in any b-series motor you like. They even offer a wiring harness adapter to be able to convert your harness to work. And since you allready have FI, you are like 5 steps closer than most of the 1st gen CRX'ers... It will take time and money to really make your 1st Gen fly, but that is the fun part, right? You could always make your own kit with a little fiberglass and alot of imagination. But they sell the 'Mugen-style' kits on e-bay. I'm still trying to find a short shifter.... But there are options, you just have to dig into them. Look at cvcc_wagon's thread about the d16a1 from an 86-89 Integra. If you get the 86-87 d16a1, it's a DIRECT drop in. Plus, it's a DOHC (Dual Over-Head Cam) motor, so it will give you a substantial HP boost, and even has a few more engine upgrades than our d15a3's do. But give it time and patience. Upgrade your exhaust to 2 1/4' from the down-pipe out with a high-flow cat and a nice performance muffler. That will give you a slight boost in HP. And remember your three starting mods will always be: I/H/E (Intake/Header/Exhaust). So, start with those and push forward! The sky and your imagination are the limits! And check out www.redpepperracing.com . There are alot of 1G CRX'ers on there with mods and such. Will give you a good springboard into your own mods.
*breathes* And welcome to the Forums!!!
