belt chirping and a dragging noise '01 Taurus
I installed a new belt in my '01 Taurus last week and was okay till yesterday, then it started to chirp and it seems like an intermitting dragging noise also. I gave a quick spray of WD-40 but it made no difference. Anyone have any idea what it could be.

check the idler and tensioner pulleys. There are small bearings inside that go bad quite often.

Oil and belts do not mix! If you have to use soap.

I use belt dressing... its not oily but kinda sticky.. if you use this take the belt off and spray it on let it soak then wipe off any excess. it gets every where if you spray it on and leave a lot on the belt

Re: belt chirping and a dragging noise '01 Taurus
oils can cause deterioration of rubber parts. Using WD-40 can cause the belt to slip and make noise. Use nothing or belt dressing on fan belts. Dressing is real sticky and helps the belt grip the pulleys.

Listen closely to see if the chirping is coming from the belt....a common problem is the Cam Sensor that chirps like you are discribing....it is located on top of the engine on the opposite end from the belt.

If it ony seems to drag at times, it could be related to your AC. listen to see if you hear your AC clutch kick in before it starts dragging. This would tell you if your problem lies within your AC problem, if so, you might have a bad AC compressor.
