code 45 or code 4 and 5?

I have a 92 S10 blazer 4.3L W 4x4 CPI...Its been doin good since I put a fuel filter, starter and I cleaned the IAC and IAT..NOW its back to not idlin at a stop and I have cold start..now when I go to start for first time it'll start like a firecracker! It was runnin great this mornin until the SES light came on..I gets to where I'm goin shut it off and restarted it and the SES light is off..I did the paper clip trick to get the codes..I got 4 flashes then 5 flashes..is this 45 or 4 and 5? I also had a smell comin out of vents(when in P idlin) that was like a sulfur or antifreeze smell like its hot..but its not hot.. Injectors? I HOPE NOT!!

It is code 45, which is o2 sensor indicating rich fuel. You should check your evap canister, which is probably located under your air cleaner housing. Split hoses, bad purge valve, disconnected hoses, cracked housing etc. will cause this. Determine the condition of these items and replace as needed. Check the canister,if fuel is leaking from it, replace it. There is also a test you can try to see if air passes thru, but you need a hand pump. The test is in the haynes book in the emissions control systems. You may also have to replace ( I would ) your O2 sensor AFTER checking / repairing /replacing the evap. canister. As for the odor coming thru vents, this condition causes gasoline odors to be smelled. You may want to check and make sure that the floorboard area on pass. side of vehicle is dry. A wet area could be the result of another common problem on old Blazers, the dreaded heater core.

If the smell you are talking about is gas, that means that the oxygen sensor is doing it's job and detected it. Your sensor may be fine.

Re: code 45 or code 4 and 5?

Crystal, before you replace that sensor, don't forget to check out the canister. You gotta repair the problem before you replace the sensor, or it will happen again. Also, if you decide to replace the sensor, pull your ECM fuses with the key in the run position to clear the codes. Pulling the neg. battery cable will do this also, and let it sit 5 min or so before re-connecting. Also, remember that you have reset your idle by clearing the ecm, so put in in D with foot on brake and allow it to re-learn the idle, especially since you have hopefully corrected the rich mixture condition.

I'm not gettin a gas smell..its a sulfur like smell as if a battery would give..but I have a new battery...I've done the disconnectin of battery with whatever I'm into...you taught me that on here blazer94..lol..plus the paper clip..that was perdy darn cool. It seems like everytime I repair or clean stuff on my baby it runs great! THEN I'm right back at square one..drivin me crazy! I'll check my canister...thanks

well, look at it this way: Your only helping your baby out. It seems that way with my baby, too, but i just love her, and I enjoy doing the work to help her out. Plus, the knowlege on these fourms is great, I've learned ALOT of stuff here, and some of these folks are pretty incredible to take the time to share what they know / learned.

Re: code 45 or code 4 and 5?

This is NOT an O2 sensor problem, his cpi injector has ruptured and now needs replacement.

Sorry, but this is your problem.

You will have to replace :

CPI Injector
Nut Kit (Internal Fuel Line Kit)
Upper plenum gasket.
