3800 questions

I've been hearing lots of good things about the 3800. I know its in some older buick models, the grand prix, and bonnevilles. Can anyone tell me just how reliable this engine is, what can go wrong and be looked out for(I heard something about coolant seepage that isn't nearly as bad as the 3.1 intake gasket), and the names of other makes/models that have this engine? I just dumped 2800 into a 95 grand am that no longer works and need a cheap and reliable car to get me from A to B.

Re: 3800 questions

The 3800 is a very reliable engine and will last 200K if properly taken care of. The non-supercharged version has had problems with lower intake gaskets so if you intend to replace the engine yourself then replace the gaskets before you put it in. If you are going to purchase a car with a 3800 then check to see if they have been replaced or if the plastic manifold was replaced by the original owner. There was a recall on this engine. If you buy an SC 3800 happy motoring. These engines can be abused and still keep running very well. Sometimes you will experience a rattle in the supercharger due to the coupler wearing but it can be replaced at home for about $60.

Re: 3800 questions

My dad has an old intrigue with the 3800 and it has about 180k and still has just as much power as it did when we first got it ... the rest of the car has had tones of problems mostly electrical but the engine is solid
