can the remote wire connect to anything else besides the head unit? like to a fuse in the fuse box or something.

You can connect it to a batt. + or whatever and run a switch. There just needs to be a 12V signal telling the amp to turn on. And you need a way to stop it like using a switch or else your amp will always stay on.

I have mine connected to some LED's... just make sure you read what the maximum amperage the turn-on lead in both the amp and head unit can handle, or you may fry them.
