Re: Jobs?

I might be wrong but I don't think many shops have a person that only welds. Most welders are employed in metal working or fabricating jobs (like ship building, pipe building, building construction, etc). I'm sure some shops have people who only weld but I don't think it's all that common.

Re: Jobs?

I used to have a neighbor that did only welding. Even had a massive diesel welder setup on the back of his truck for mobile jobs. A good idustrial type welder can make tons of money. Underwater welding especially, for obvious reasons (hazardous).

Re: Jobs?

Underwater welders make good money. Also just for experience go get a job in a locally owned exhaust shop. Learn how to weld Aluminum really good. That is where the money really is.

Re: Jobs?

I am sure that your college has a lot of data on this as well. Usually they have charts of certain salarys of certain years in different fields and the employment rate after you are done your program as well.

He probably didn't use a helmet/eye protection too often... My old work had one that darkened instantly so you could see where your going to start without having to look, then flip the hood down, then weld....
Yes... if you can learn how to weld aluminum you can make some pretty good ching$$ if you are good and fast...
I can tell you that ARC welding sucks... wire fed is pretty easy if you have a good teacher... and aluminum is kinda tough but once you can do the "roll of dimes" you are set... if you don't know what the meaning of "roll of dimes" .... look at an aluminum trailers welds or your FMIC/SMIC and the weld looks like a roll of dimes... he he he
Underwater welding isn't really hazardous... it's just kinda tough.. you also need to be certified for "scuba".. that isn't that hard...my cousin does that down in arizona....
The only real hazard of the trade is burns to your arms if you don't use a smock and retina burning if you don't use eye protection...
I say go for it and get into the union...Good luck yo!!!
