launching tips?

any tips on how to launch a vr4 without breaking anything or putting a lot of strain on it? ive heard that you have to have it at like 3k and slowly let out the clutch and when you feel it grab, drop it or let it out rather quickly? suggestions?

Re: launching tips?

Watch out if you slip it out too slow you might burn the clutch and you don't want to drop it to fast at too high of an RPM or you'll jack something up, my brother messed up the timing on an SL that way. I would experiment starting at like 3k and then goign up 500rpm each time till you find the sweet spot where it is fast enough, but doesn't spin or hop too much. That's how I normally do it, but there are alot of different ways. Good luck

Re: launching tips?

I think i read somewhere that 4.5-5k was a "safe" range to do it at for a a day to day, or every other day run.

You wont get wheel hop in an AWD. The only way your brother messed up the timing is from a faulty tensioner or bad belt and the high RPM's caused it to skip teeth. 3k rpm is too low of an RPM to LAUNCH a VR4. I know people who have done 5500-6500 clutch dumps for a launch and not broken a thing. Its all about technique. For an inexperied person I would say 5k max till you get used to it.

Re: launching tips?

oh I was just kinda guessing, that is what happened cause the thing came limping home badly and didn't run or idle smoothly and hardly did really anything. sort of a vague descripton I just said but what ever lol. My bros SL had wheel hop, but that is kidna expect cause it is FWD vs AWD in the vr4 huh?

Re: launching tips?

I just wrote something up about this in the non-specific street racing section. There are 2 techniques...slipping and dumping. Dumping requires less skill, and generally puts alot more stress on the drivetrain. For dumping you tack it up to a high rev and just drop the clutch and give it gas, with some practice you wont bog on the launch and will get some amazing lauches. However this puts alot of stress on your t-case and sooner or later something will break. So IMO, you want to learn how to slip the clutch.

Rev between 3 and 4k, and let the clutch out a little slower, when you get it to the point of engagement then you let it out alot faster, all in all, it just takes practice. Practice makes perfect, and there are tons of threads about this here and on 3si.

Yep, FWD will have wheel hop but it will be maginified if the motor mounts are bad. I had bad wheel hop till I eventually basically broke my rear motor mount. I had som extras that I filled with window weld and my wheel hop is almost non existent now.
