1965-66 Bonneville ignition help

Long story short, the car has been in the family since it was born. My dad loves it to death.....and well...its about at the death phase. My brother and I want to surprise him and get it restored, but to qualify for restoration it needs to run. We tried starting it to find the ignition switch was in 2 pieces inside the 'dash'. We tried plugging it back together but get no response from it still (not sure if we did it right, hard to take everything out to see what to do...plus sneaking around when my dads not home limits our time. Is there a way to hotwire the car to make sure it starts using the ignition part that doesn`t have the key go in it? The part with the contacts on it. We are desperate to get it started and restore the poor rust pile to its natural beauty. Please help!
