Odd tapping... I think I have problems

I had a tapping noise this afternoon after I got off work when I started my car. It sounded like it was coming from my left bank (drivers side) and on the top end. Almost like a valve tap, or a rocker arm tapping noise. I dont think this engine has rocker arms, but it sounded like a oiling issue. Any suggestions to clear out the oil passages on the top of the engine. I had a villiger in the shop with a simaler problem and all of its oil passages on the heads were blocked up, sounds alot like the same problem I have, But the Villiger owner drove that van into the ground so we ended up replaceing the engine. I am tring not to do that..... although it would be a great time to start on the new engine.

Hmm maybe if I am lucky it may have just been a passing partical of junk. I am going to most likely change my oil this weekend at work and try and run some oil system treatment through it.

Hodo I think Gunk makes a engine oil flush. You run it before you change the oil. To make sure read the directions.
Our Z32's have hydraulic lifters and it could be a collapsed lifter.

I don't believe in oil flushes... problems start to occur once you clean out all that shit that was keeping the motor held together.

try using some seafoam in that next oil change, they make some specifically for head and oil conditioning i think

oh, and im not saying that was definitely the cause of my headgasket blowing...it could have just been a coincidence.

Re: Odd tapping... I think I have problems

No it was a tap on the top end. It went away after the car sat for about 3 hours. I am thinking its definately a oiling problem. Perhaps one of the oil passages is blocked and causeing the lifters to tap on that cylinder. Or it could have been something that got caught up under my intake plenum or engine and sounded like a valve tapping. I just know now I am going to have to put a rush job on the next engine.

Re: Odd tapping... I think I have problems

thats about how my rod bearing started thewre for one second then sounds great then it spun a bearing (not saying your case i hope itsd not)
and if its blockage it seems like it would tick when you start it back up due to no oil till pressuire built up but it could have just been a heated lifter and caused it to boil the oil and run dry till it cooled just take it easy for a little and change the oil asap
good luck]

Re: Odd tapping... I think I have problems

I am changing the oil this weekend. Its due anyway. Not to worried about it. I might yank the valve covers this week and take a closer look. If I have time.

Re: Odd tapping... I think I have problems

hopefully it was just a heated lifter thouh and if you drive hard itsover due much sooner than when you r gramma drives(unless shes like mine then its a little sooner lol) but anyway hopefully the oil change helps and also its probably not a good idea to just pop youer cover off things are better off left alone unless repairing or improving unless you want to give it its physicl and dont forget to make cough on a good run (anmd then a nice cool down jog of coarse lol)

Re: Odd tapping... I think I have problems

I work at a lincoln dealership as a tech, I think I can figure out my Nissan. I pulled the engine on a Villiger nothing can be more of a pain than that..... more the customer who wanted to see the valves and the cams before we pulled the engine to see if they were any good. 3 days to get that done, needless to say I was not a happy camper.
