De-tuning Engine

Hey, since gas prices are going A-wall I was wanting to know if anyone has ever heard of de-tuning or changing the engine computer configurations so that it can go from using premium to using regular gas . Ive heard of people doing it to other engines and then will re-tune to engine to normal . If there isnt a way to de-tune it is it just okay to use regular and it wont mess up the engine?

Plus Ive heard that the J30 engines are de-tuned 300zx engines so supposedly you can either change a chip in the computer or change the configurations.

If anyone has any details please tell me gas prices are still rising here daily!

Cheaper gas does not necessarily mean more mpg --->Knock Sensor KS. When KS detect ping (often caused by low octane), it reduces ign timing until no ping. Retarded ignition means more gas will be burned. =Total costs up.

If detuning=cheaper gas:
- Retarded ign setting lets engine run with lower octane without blowing up. ...adjust...

More mpg ---> tune up your engine
More mpg ---> get your pedal behaviour in ctrl.
+++More mpg ---> You've got a wrong car, buy honda civic

Re: De-tuning Engine

What elevation are you at? Here in CO, you can use gas as low as 4 octane lower than the octane required for your car because of the elevation. So an S2000 or NSX can use 87 octane up here. I believe anyplace over 4000ft above sea level applies.

Re: De-tuning Engine

You can probably do this by adjusting the 'camshaft position sensor', and using a timing light. Drop the timing back to around 8-10' BTDC...that should let you use low octain gas.

Keep in mind:
This 'retarding' of your timing will give you less HP. That means that when you are used to accelerating at a certian rate before, you will now need to press the gas pedal further to achieve that same rate of acceleration. You know what that means, right? More gas is used. You will 'nil' out the effects of cheaper gas unless you really do drive slower (read: not gona happen).

Also, think of this. When you bought your car you knew you needed to use Premium, I'd assume. Back then let's say reg was $1.00 and prem was 20 cents more at $1.20. So, Premium USED to be 20% more expensive than regular.

Nowadays, regular gas is say $2.00. But Premium is still 20 cents higher at $2.20. Well, even though it's still 20 cents more, that's only 10% more due to the higher 'reg' price.

So if you put some logic into the deal, you'd quickly understand that there has never been a better time to use premium gas! It used to be 20% more expensive and now it's only 10% more expensive. RIGHT?!? And if you WERE willing to pay 20% more before, then certianly you should be willing to pay a mear 10% more nowadays?

TO EVERYONE: Gas was at it's highest in the late 80's at an inflation adjusted $3.50 gal. We are still some of the cheapest in the world, and the way premium seems to be set at 20 cents more than reg, no matter what the price of regular is, then we really need to spend our energies in more appropriate areas, rather than making our engines slugs!
Try instead a K&N filter, Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flow mufflers, and chrome tips to replace the collector box out back. You'll save more $$ that way in better gas milage AND have better performance.

Things arent always what they seem.

Yes and 10 points!

Here gas is at its cheapest - about 4.5$ per gallon, 95%taxes. Anybody there wants more of this socialism? Be happy and burn GAS.
