Question bad TURBO on my GSX, need advicer quick!!

So over the last week or so my car has been burning oil seeing that there was blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. It progressively got a lot worse after about 5 days and now smoke pours out when i shift/stop. Ive been told that the turbo is shot and can either be rebuilt for around 1000 bucks or i can buy a new one. I am wondering if looking for a used/ any t25 stock turbo on ebay would the best option or would buying a new one be the way to go. I need advice quick because going without my car is gonna be tough. It's a '97 gsx and has most of the usual bolt on mods and exhaust and boost controller and whatnot. When i get the new turbo on, will the boost controller be set at the previous psi or will it have to be reset? Any info or advice would be much appreciated and asap. Thanks.

Rebuild for 1000 bucks? You can pick up a good condition used T25 for about 100 bucks. SOmetimes for free. But if you have the money and wanted to upgrade, now is certainly the time. But a used t25 is easy to replace and will get you back on the road quick.

Re: bad TURBO on my GSX, need advicer quick!!

Make sure it's not valve stem seals before you replace your turbo. Your turbo would probably smoke more when you're boosting than when you're stopped at idle (higher oil pressure). My leaky valve stem seals puffed smoke at idle and on take-offs on my talon...

EDIT>> an easy way to check if it is valve stem seals is to take off the exhaust mani. If there are oil stains in one or more exhaust ports, chances are your valve stem seals on those cylinders are blown. You'll have an easier time with the turbo swap if you pull the manifold anyway, so you might as well check.

Re: bad TURBO on my GSX, need advicer quick!!

1000 for a rebuild is uber shit. Turbochargers.com has "the eliminator" t-25 and t-28 replacement for 750 plus your old core. Holds 380, or, if you have some good mods, add 200 and upgrade to tdo6 and 500hp. Take a shit, put it in a bag and burn it on the asshole's lawn who tried to get you to pay 1g for a FUCKING REBUILD.
Turbocharger.com will rebuild it for as little as 275.

On a side note, I have a t-25 from my 95 tsi when I put my evo III in, it worked great, didn't check for shaft play, but it prob has a small amount. Turbo is in excellent cond. NO rust, damn clean turbo. Never had any problems. The guy b4 me who owned the car was some old white guy, and def didn't race it. I drove the car harder than him, but never raised the boost. $50 plus shipping if you want, just taking up space in my garage.

Re: bad TURBO on my GSX, need advicer quick!!

I asked around and found one barely used at a local shop and they said they would sell and install for 150 or so, but the whole upgrade to a 16g has come around and im thinkin on that too. Does replacing the stock t25 with 16g require a lot of other adjustments and stuff or is it a direct replacement that would be easy?

Re: bad TURBO on my GSX, need advicer quick!!

its not a direct bolt on!! the turbo itself is but to make everything hook up to it you need to by a 2g install kit or just modify and make your own kit because the 2g kit cost around $150!!!

Here is a picture of what a 2g kit consist of.
