well i recently helped out in a friends project truck which was a 74 shot bed, standard cab pickup. we turned the 350 into a resalvaged 454 monster of a sleeper. alot of the work he did on the motor had help from a local shops gear master. and the debate has been because he wants to continue the voyage onto truck race-dom if he can jimmy a 6-speed corvette tranny into it which im pretty sure it can be accepted as the truck has huge room. but would the modification even be possible? the truck itself was an automatic but the second owner made it a manual how he did is beyond us (if anyone wants to explain how its done i would really appreciate it) but its a 5 speed from a 94 w/t cheyenne.
Is the Corvette Tranny possible? beneficial? remember its not my project and im simply asking as an observation from chevy truck owners nation wide. and the bonus question of how the previous owner changed it from auto to manual. just because i know its a whole tranny swap but about adding the clutch pedal and such. im just confused at all the in depth work and as to how hard it might be. thanks for your time chevy owners. 13 out. |

Re: 74 pickup... or indy truck?
Well to change an automatic to a standard you basicly need to hang a clutch and cut a hole in the floor to execpt the shifter of the standard trans. I would assume the guy that did it used a hydraulic clutch kit. As far as the six speed I would need to know what year the six speed is as I am not fimilar with vets.

Re: 74 pickup... or indy truck?
hydrolic clutch uses fluid, manual clutch simply uses metal links and bars that go down to the tranny.

Re: 74 pickup... or indy truck?
friend of mine turned a auto into manual just cut a hole in the floor for the linkage and hung a pedal and ran the linkage.

As goinbig said a hydraulic clutch use fluid to move a slave cylinder to disengage the clutch. You can also run a series of rods called a linkage to disengage the clutch. I just assume he used hydraulic because it is much eaiser to run a hydraulic line than to hang and rig all the linkage. As far as the trans goes I think you may run into some problems with that but I am not sure. At the least i think you will have trouble getting the speedo to work. I will look into this some more though and when I find out more I will let you know. |
