too much oil, help!

well, i borrowed a buddy's ranger for a while. i knew an oil change hasn't been done in a while so i check the oil level and couldn't see any oil on the stick. no problem, i'll just top it off.

i put in like 3qts and checked the level again. being the idiot i am, i didn't wait for the oil to level out. i turn the truck on, seemed fine until the engine started stuttering. i rev a few and then noticed the big cloud of white smoke coming out the tail.

a buddy and myself managed to drain the oil down to where its supposed to be (long story) but the truck still stutters and smokes after a few seconds turned on.

what happened? how can i fix what i've done? i feel horrible enough that i might have ruined a friend's ride let alone the idea of having to shell out the dough to fix it w/ money i don't really have. if anyone could share some knowledge and advice it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Re: too much oil, help!

Chances are when you over filled it, you fouled the valve guides and seats. A former friend of mine did this to a 89 Chevy 1500 V-6 I used to own, but didn't even bother to offer to help me get it fixed (hence the "former" in his friend title). The head(s) will either need to be machined or replaced, either of which are a witch and a half. At least you're willing to help him fix it.

Re: too much oil, help!

Easiest thing to do is replace the plugs. They probably got oil fouled. Cheap, and may be the only thing you need to do.
