97 Corolla Upgrade Questions?

I'm not one of those guys who'd put stickers all over there car and a muffler that makes the car sound like a blender, but I really like my car. I've driven the new model of the corolla, and just isn't up to par. Nor Do I like german engineering. Strangely, i'd rather Have my car over my sisters 300 series bmw or my others sisters 2004 volkswagen jetta.

I was wondering If it were possible to upgrade the engine/trans in my car to perhaps something more fuel efficient or perhaps more powerful. I know the engine can't be that big as well, its a corolla. Nor Do I want my car to sound like a blender.

It would be acceptable to cut a hole in the hood. Though nothing to hard core like cuting away the chasis. Though perhaps placing certain objects that would help the new engine fit as long as its cost effective.

Any idea on what to use and how much it'd cost?

Also the car starts to get rough at 70 and shakes when i go any faster. Any ideas what might fix this? Shocks? Tires? Putting an ugly tail on my car?

Keep in mind I am not very car savvy. Explain like you would a child.
