cold start sputter and dies 89 wrangler

I'm working on an 89 wrangler w/ a standard trans. 6 cyl, with 35,000 mi. on a new engine. Upon cold starting I have to feather the pedal to keep it running. For the first 10-15 mins. while driving, the Jeep continues to stall at stop signs, or other situations when I am not applying the gas. Anybody have any ideas?

so it's a 4.2l with a carb.? Was the carb. replaced when the engine was? I would first check the oreration of the carb and check the heat tube from the exhaust manifold to the intake.

Re: cold start sputter and dies 89 wrangler

I had this exact problem with my '94 YJ. I replaced my IAC and my MAP sensor and all my vacuum lines and nothing was helping. I ended up replacing my thermostat for other reasons and it fixed my idle problem too. I have NO idea what that had to do with my cold idle, but it fixed it. Give that a try.
