engine help needed

Ok all i need help. I have a 97 honda civic Hx. The engine is completely stock. I was driving down the highway one day and i guess hit something i didnt see or something of that nature. Anyways, all the oil pretty much drained from the car and i pulled over immediently. I tried to start the car again and i just heard loud tapping. I called the tow company and they said i had a hole in the block from where i guess one of the rods or something punched through it. Ok now what i need to know is what i need to replace to get it back running. I am not making much money so the cheapest way to get my baby running again is recommended. Can i just replace the block or do i need to replace the whole engine. If i can just replace the block which blocks could i replace it with or does it have to be the same one? I just need to know what parts are needed and my dads friend has agreed to do the work for me. Please anyone thats knows about this please help me on the info.

Re: engine help needed

check the head to see if its salvagable. if it is, then get a new short block.

if head is damaged, then just grab a new longblock.

Re: engine help needed

I have seen complete engines for around $250 on ebay. it might be worth while to completely switch out the whole thing, instead of mismatching parts.

Re: engine help needed

grab the VTEC head of an EX model. that is if all u needd is a head. if u need a whole engine exman98 knows a site whre u can get used engines. i know ur on a tight budget but if u need to replace the engine why not upgrade to a B-series or my favorite the H22A4

Re: engine help needed

if youre on a budget replace whats broken, if you have the money, now is the time to swap because you need to pull the motor anyway.
