hesitating- as if misfire, after running empty

failed to gas up, and next morning in hurry to run some errands, van stall due to empty tank. filled tank and since then it vibrates at idle as if it missing. did my fuel pump get damage or bottom dirt in tank clogging fuel filtr or injector- please advise.

Does it seem to be a rythmic "misfire", or more random. A failed or plugged injector would produce a more rythmic stumbling then if it was a general fuel delivery issue.

Running the tank on empty itself shouldn't have caused this problem unless a component was already starting to fail. Things I would check would be:
-Fuel pressure. What type of pressure are you getting? There is a test port just behind the PS pump that you can screw a guage into to test. You can borrow one from AutoZone I beleive for the cost of the guage, but if you return it they refund all your money. If you get good fuel pressure, then it's not likely that its the fuel pump. If you get poor pressure, it could be the pickup sock is clogged, the pump is failing (it needs gas around it to help cool it), or it picked up some crud and clogged the fuel filter
-Fuel filter. When was the last time it was changed. This often is a forgotten about filter. If you are getting good pressure, it's not likely that this is bad, but still something to consider. When you ran out of gas, the pump
-Tune up. It may have just been a coincidence that the stumbling started the same time you ran out of gas. Check plugs, wires, ignition coil, etc. Don't forget air filter and PCV valve. Also look for vacume hoses that have come disconnected, pinched, or otherwise have restrictions or leaks.

Is your MIL on? That may also indicate where the problem is happening and what is causing it.

THe occurence you describe has been reported before in several instances. It seems that running the pump dry has a real probability of inducing a detrimental effect. Sure it may idicate the pump was already worn and this is just what was required to exacerbate the problem.
So the relation between cause and effect cannot be ignored. Have a fuel pressure check as described here to confirm the cause.
