96 sunfire will sometimes crank but wont start

hi everyone im new here and i need some help-i have a 96 sunfire non-gt i think its a 2.2
anyway sometimes when i turn the key on i hear the fuel pump cycle on and it starts fine but other times when i turn the key on the pump doesnt cycle and the car cranks but never starts
i dont think its the relay because i tried it in another car and it works fine and i also replaced the fuel pump and the filter-it was doing this before i did that also
could it be the throttle position sensor or maybe a problem with the ignition or something else
any ideas on this would be much apreciated

sometimes i will sit there and turn the key off and on a few times and the pump never comes on but eventually if i do it enough times the pump will come on and the car starts
after it starts it runs great-the problem seems to be when i first turn the key on and for some reason the pump doesnt always get the signal to turn on
its frustrating

well i solved the problem a few weeks ago
it turns out that the ignition wiring harness in the steering wheel was loose
i taped it up good and tight and voila it works great now

could be a bad harness or wiring between the relay and the pump, or even a bad ground to the fuel pump.

Parrina I have the exact same problem and i know what u are talking about in ur post....
I have already gone thru the fuel pump and fuel relay change as it was under dealer warranty. :-)
Any pointers to how the problem was solved....
It is getting really frustrating
