96 3.8L with P1538

This is what I got:

1996 Windstar 3.8L pulled code of P1538. After reading different posts in this forum, I tested the IMRC actuators by pulling the vacuum line off one to see if other worked. When I pulled front one off, the back worked, but when I pulled the back one off the front didn't work. To verify this, I shut engine off and got out my handy vacuum gauge. When I pulled vaccuum one the back one, I saw the linkage move like it should. When I pulled vacuum on the front one, it did nothing. I have determined that the front is bad (common sense, huh?). Also I noticed where the arm comes out the actuator into the linkage, the clip/retainer was missing that holds it in place. It had been missing all this time and the linkage rod wasn't even in the linkage. Anyway, when funds allow, I will replace the part, but it will be a while. So, my question is, will any damage be done while continuing to drive with the front actuator not working, but the back one is?

I also think I found oil in my antifreeze. When I opened the radiator cap, I noticed brown crud floating in radiator. When I looked in overflow tank, I definitely saw oil (black spots floating). Looks like it might be time for a head gasket set, right?

By the way, these forums have been a lifesaver. I have learned a lot since I have joined, and noticed there are a lot of people willing to help.

Rusty
