2000 Monte Carlo SS Modifications

Are the factory speakers in the 2000 Monte Carlo SS maxxed out by the factory amp? Why I'm asking is I'm wondering whether or not if it would be better to just get a new amp to push the factory speakers. I'm just looking to get a little more bass out of what is already in my car. Anyone also know of any other methods of doing this?

The second thing I'm wondering about is air filters and cold air intakes. I was thinking about getting some made by K&N. What model do you all think I should get? Also would I have to make any adjustments in order to put them in properly?

I'm assuming you have the Series II 3800 na. On engine mods the best thing to do before adding a CAI would be to get the ECU/PCM re-programmed to take advantage of those mods such as CAI and CAT back exhaust system, etc.

Digital Horsepower has a DHP 1.0 PCM mod for normally aspirated Monte Carlo SS and Impala SS/LS. Plus the PCM mod is now available for the 04 models to include supercharged.

Is it a necessity to get the PCM reprogrammed? If not what are the benefits of getting it reprogrammed?

It also says at the bottom that the PCM is only for offroad only. So is it street illegal to drive with?

I is not a necessity to have the ECU/PCM re-programmed to run a CAI,
however, there are benefits listed below:

FEATURES:
- Speed limiter removed
- 3-1 and 4-2 skip shifts
- Transmission line pressure increased
- Shift points moved (5800-6000rpms)
- Fan turn on points altered:
- 186 degree turn on
- 2 minute fan on at key-off (this feature activates when engine coolant is 179 degrees or greater)
- MAF calibration adjusted for proper operation and year
- Digital Horsepower Inc. fuel/spark adjustments:
- En-richens fuel delivery for critical problem areas
- Provides a consistent power gain across the entire power band
- Reduces spark retard (knock retard)
- Removes “40MPH WOT lag”
- Dynamometer testing has shown approximately 8-12HP in 60 degree temperatures on a development vehicle using 93 octane fuel.

The "off road" use is just their disclaimer. I don't believe that it is illegal to run a modified ECU at least where I'm located. As long as the car passes emissions there should be no problem.

Lots of people owning GM cars on the forum have them and operate on the street. I've been running a re-programmed one since 2003 in a '97 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, of course, after the warranty expired.
