auto tranny problem

my shift cable, or something broke, and i can't shift from inside the car. i know how to shift it by hand, but i can't get it into drive. i'm gonna try and unhook the cable from the transmission then try again. any advice on fixing this, or exactly what i need to fix? the shift knob will move, but it won't shift gears. it's an 02 automatic
please please help! i don't wanna have to pop the hood everytime i park my car!
