Angry 1995 Wrangler Clicking noise

I had originally posted a tread: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=336329 where I was having trouble getting my Jeep in 4x4. I figured out it was the aftermarket posi-loc I installed on the front diff, but now I've noticed a clicking noise when I let off the gas in second and third gears only. More than likely either my tranny or t-case could be low on lube, but is this an indication that I still have t-case/transmission problems? I did also notice durring the blizzard here in Colorado April 10th then if I try to shift into 4wd while moving my t-case grinds. I need to be stopped to get the darn thing into 4wd. My Jeep Sucks.
it's got the AX-15 tranny with a Np231 t-case.

Check your oil pan for dents

Also if it just started, it has to do with whatever you just did. So you said it was your posi-loc diff, well most likely it still is. That is my 2 canadian cents worth

The noise is not coming from the front diff. It's definately coming from either the tranny or t-case. I only hear the clicking when I let off the gas in second or third gear only. This wekend I'm going to drain them both and fillem with the thickest gear oil I can think of. It's becoming spring/summer here so I plan on wheeling, I just pray I don't break the transmission.

Hey bud, your rig is like mine, how do you like your 3.5" lift with your 33" tires?

I do not understand the measurement 33x12.5 guess cuz im canadian eh. What is this Jet Chip Stage 2 you post? How much it cost, and what HP can I achieve?

I actually have a 2 1/2 in lift and 1 inch shakles. It's a great setup. I almost have enough room for 35's. As for the Jet chip.

JET performance modules are custom calibrated for maximum torque and horsepower under a wide range of RPM’s and load ranges. Easily installed in just minutes! Stage 2 modules: calibrated for peak horsepower with Jeep 4.0L engines that are modified with low restriction exhaust systems (such as Borla headers and Cat-Back systems – sold separately) and a low temperature thermostat (Part # 10170). All stage 2 chips are street legal in all 50 states.

Ok, now the noise has gotten louder and I can hear it in all gears. I haven't changed the fluid in either the tranny or t-case but I suspect they're both low. Bummer. Do you think it will hurt the jeep to put in thicker than 80w-90 gear oil. like 90w-140?

Re: 1995 Wrangler Clicking noise

My t-case made a ticking noise when it was low on oil -- almost better than a warning light!

The noise is deninately coming from my t-case. I was foolin around with 4wd yesterday, and i can't hardly get the shifter all the way into 4wd, and it WILL NOT shift on the fly, just grinds. Anyone got a cheap NP231 for sale? E-mail me [email protected]

Re: 1995 Wrangler Clicking noise

hey man don't upt the gear oil in the transfer case. You'll wear the chain (stretch) in no time. the thick gear oil won't lube the pins in the links -chain stretches and gets slack and wears into the case. very bad.

Mercon or dextron or compatible synthetic ATF is called for in the transfer case.

Trany calls for 75w90 GL5 - synthetic is best.

dont switch them around

Thumbs down

Here's what I did. I used Micro-dextron er whatever it's called and I mixed a little bit of 80w-90 maybe less then a 1/4 quart. I filled the tranny with 85w-140 mixed with 80w-90 half and half. The noise is almost completely gone and I can shift into 4wd again. This is truely short term fix until I can replace the t-case. She's been beaten to death. I actually drove it in 4wd with the rear drive shaft out for 10 miles at over 40 mph, it's toast!!!!
