Unhappy K1500 1997 air conditioning

I have a problem with my pickups air conditioning. When I turn off the air conditioning and put the knob on cold air it blows great from the vent but when I put the air conditioning on it doesn't come out at all. I then put the knob to the foot position and it blows good cold air out the bottom so I don't think my compressor needs recharging or is bad. Has anybody else had this problem? Its like the switch is bad or doesn't transition right to the vents when the air conditioning is on. Thanks for any replys.

If the fan is on high and then you switch it from vent to a/c, do you still hear the blower motor?

Yeah, the blower still works fine but when I switch it to the vents for blowing out into the cab it pushes all the cold air out onto the floorboards. This only happens when I push in the A/C button and works fine for the regular air. The air seems cold coming out onto the floorboards but is not coming out of the vents for the cab.

There is a mode actuator that controls where the air goes (it control the mode door). Since it seems to work when the a/c is off, my guess would be the a/c controller is not working right.
