How to remove the Power Seat

Wow... two posts in one day! Can anyone tell my GA is a piece of junk?

My driver's side power seat (2000 GA SE2) stopped working a while ago. When I try to use it, I can hear the motor whirring away, but the seat doesn't move (it's supposed to go up/down). I'm assuming it's a linkage issue, so I just need to get the seat out and fix that up. Herein lies the problem: I haven't a clue how to remove the seat!!!

Can anyone give me directions to get the seat out? Also, what should I be looking for in terms of the linkage of the motor to the seat?

You will need a star bit breaker that will fit the two back brackets holding down the seat. The seat itself rests on two main rails, that hook into the front floor pan, and then are bolted down in the back. You will need to remove the 2 bolts from the back of the rails, and then rock the seat forward. While it is rocked forward, you will need to hold it up, and disconnect the wire harnasses that lead to it from underneath. It's kind of a PITA to hold it there and undo them at the same time, but I managed to pull it off a few months ago on my 01 GT, and I'm not that strong, so you should be able to do it - it's just worth a lot of cussing, but it can be done. After you have the harnasses disconnected, you will be able to lift and pull the seat out of the brackets. You will also need to lean the seat all the way forward first - it'll make it a lot easier.

Ain't it the truth that some swear words generally go with most repairs??? I know chillun and wimmen shouldn't be around me when I tackle a repair that is new to me., LOL. Even my g/f gets upset at my "language" when I work on her or my ride, sigh, I a potty-mouth I guess.

LOL! Yeh so very true. I had orginally removed my passenger side seat last summer, and I got so hot and pissed off and sweaty that I took of my shirt and was sitting there reaming on it all sweaty and redfaced cussing my ass off, and then my friend pulled up and he asked "what are you doing to your car now?" and I told him I was just busy having a minor disagreement with my seat . LoL then I took out my driver side one back during the winter, not quite as bad because I had down the method, and it wasn't 85 degrees and humid out like it was the time before. But yeh some jobs on our cars can deffinately be worth a few choice words. LoL

Don't I know it!! I had a helluva time changing the A/C resistor a few months ago... small job, I know... but there was much grunting and swearing while trying to find the screws and get them out!

Did you ever get the power seat fixed? Having the same problem.

Motor works fine, apparently the worm gear inside of it (I assume thats what moves the bar) is stripped. Anyone figure out a fix to this? Problem is that the motor is almost riveted to the mechanism.

The problem with these things is you can't get individual parts for the assembly, the dealer will only sell you the entire part, and this isn't limited to GM. I needed a clip for the radio trim on my wife's f*rd, went to the dealer they told me i had to buy the entire panel for $90, went to a parts store dug around in a bin for an hour or so and found what i was looking for, cost me a whole 25 cents, and no bad language involved in that one. As for the seat, see if you can find one in a wreck with good parts in it, even if it got wet your motor is good, just swap them if they are riveted in drill them out and bolt them.

Yeah, I figured I'd probably have to just replace the whole stupid thing. Geez, I hate this car.
