Thumbs up RPO codes

Hi Guys...and Gals...Newbie here...I was wondering if anybody knew where I can find the RPO codes for my 1996 Silverado 3500 Dually. It has the 5.7 ltr. Thats all I know. Recently the service engine light came on also and was wondering if anybody knew where I could decipher the code on that as well...I still haven't pulled the code number yet...I have the flu rite now....Thanks in advance...Robert B.

hey Paizon -

Are you looking for RPO Codes or DTC Codes?

RPO codes are usually listed on a sticker in the glovebox, and they translate into options your truck has, ie. Z71 is the Z71 package, G80 is a Posi rear, they indicate interior and exterior color, engine size and so on.

DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) are what is stored in your trucks computer when your check engine light goes on.

As far as pulling the codes on a truck like yours, it's not as easy as the 88-95 models, yours has OBDII (on-board diagnostics, version 2) and you need a scan tool.

Check this out for more into - Good Luck!

Re: RPO codes

Go to the dealer service department and ask for a vehicle build sheet that will decipher all the RPO codes for free, amazingly enough. Just talk to a service writer and give them your VIN, they should give you a printout of any warrenty service that was documented in the GM warrenty database, along with information about your RPO codes and their definitions. As for diagnostic trouble codes, check out www.troublecodes.net and bring up the OBDII drop down menu. From there you can select what prefix it has. www.obddiagnostics.com has a guy that sells an OBDII reader for about $85 bucks. I purchased one through him and I love it. Only catch, it would really help if you had a laptop computer, because it hooks into your serial port connection. Good luck -Chris

Or you could give me the Regular Production Option codes from your glove box, and I will translate them for you. As far as Dianostic Trouble Codes, you need to know what the alpha numeric code is first. There are alot of them and you only need the troubleshooting steps for the given code.
