Toasted a modded WRX

I was driving across the San Mateo Bridge tonight at about 75mph in the #2 lane when out of nowhere a car gets so close to my ass I couldn't even see his headlights. Since there was plenty of room to pass in either lane I figured he either wanted to race or I musta cut this fucker off pretty good earlier in the night and he was pissed. So I keep it in 5th gear and gave it about 1/2 throttle to see if he could keep up. Right away I could tell from the headlights and hood scoop that it was the STi's little brother...the WRX.

Oh well...maybe he's modded that thing a little. So after I slow up at about 90mph he comes flying by me doing about 115mph and I hear the tsssshhhht tsssshhhhht coming from the BOV. The BOV alone means nothing but the exhaust sound kicked ass. It sounded mean as hell. Gotta love the sound of a 3" TB on a boxer. So at this point I figure he's at least a little modded. I also noticed that the car was lowered with wider rims/tires. It really was a good looking car IMHO.

By the time I catch up we're off the bridge and into 92 East in Hayward. He pulls up next to me and we slow down to about 45mph...

him: {smiling} "You ready to get spanked dog"
me: {laughing} "Where do you wanna run?"
him: "not here...follow me"

So I follow this perfect stranger and his black WRX to a spot about 2 blocks from my office that I've raced at myself 3 or 4 times before. I though it was my secret spot. I guess I'm not the only one that knows about it. I work in an industrial area so the roads are wide and totally deserted after business hours. This place is safe so at this point I'm thinking this dude either 1.) is a total regular and is about to hustle me or 2.) he is smart enough to only race where he's not gonna get busted.

I pull up next to him when he pulls over and he motions for me to pull over to. The guy turned out to be pretty cool. He was in his early 20's and said he's planning to buy an Evo 9 RS when they hit the USDM this fall. My RS was apparently the first one he'd ever seen in person. He spent a lot of time complimenting me on the car and said that he was a Subaru guy through and through but the current Evo appeals more to him than the current STi. Anyways I look under the hood of the WRX and he says he has a full 3" exhuast, Vishnu Subzero package, and a K&N drop-in filter. He had about 60k miles on the engine. I told him my car is 100% bone stock and popped the hood too.

So at this point he tells me his clutch is barely hanging on to life and would I mind if we went from a roll. I said no problem and off we went.

1st run was from 15mph. One honk of the horn and we were off. He jumps a little bit initially but I make up ground and by 60mph have pulled ahead by about 8-10 feet. I let off at about 100mph with about a 2 car gap between our bumpers. He just starts shaking his head when I pulled up next to him and says he wants to do another run from about 40mph.

2nd run was in 2nd gear but I think I could have done nearly as well in 3rd. These fucking USDM Evos are tuned to lose boost after 5k RPM's so I hit that pretty quick. It was the same story as the first race except I jumped about 1/2 CL when he honked. I shut down at about 100mph again but he went flying by. When we turned around he pulled up next to me and said he thought we were gonna go to 120mph. UMMMMMMMM-K. So anyways by this point the dude is sorta pissed but at the same time he keeps telling me he knew the '05 Evo was quicker than the '03 and '04 but now he knows by how much. He said my car pulled like his buddy's '03 Evo with a reflash and CB exhaust. He asked for one more race from a dig and I said sure.

3rd run I dropped the clutch at about 3500 RPM's and he put about a car length on me. I quick shifted into 2nd and started pulling a slightly. By about 70mph I was JUST about to pass him when hits the brakes. I think he did that so he could claim a kill but oh well...he can have it. I already proved my point and didn't need to BBQ my clutch to make it again.

All in all the runs were hella fun. He sorta pulled some bullshit excuses and manuevers out of his ass, but he spent a lot of money modifying that car so I can't say I blame him. The best part is that today was my b-day.

Re: Toasted a modded WRX

Good kill and Happy Birthday. I figure i'll give you a hint on launching the evo. You have to spool the turbo. Basically rev the engine repeatedly between 4500-6000 rpms. After spooling a bit, just dump the clutch, and voila, you have a sub 2 sec. pass (My best was 1.8 sec.). Don't do it too often though, cause that stock clutch sucks, and is very expensive to replace.

Um, no offense, but I'm pretty sure he knows exactly how to launch it. Anybody can dump an AWD clutch, that is hardly the best way IMO to launch it, learn to successfully slip the clutch and you will have less chance of bogging, you can get out of the hole faster 1.6-1.7 60', and it puts less strain on your drivetrain if you learn to do it properly.

Secondly, reving repeatedly wont do anything, the turbo will spool when he launches at higher rpms, so he isn't going to have any turbo lag, but he also wont build any boost just sitting there...so all that up and down reving will just heat up the clutch.

Not to mention the fact that he said, he didn't want to wear down his clutch so he was taking it easy, so this whole thing is redundant.

Steiner...happy birthday man, and sounds like it was a pretty good opponent.

i was always under the impression that the 03's were faster then the 0'5s since the i usually see 03 standard EVO's trap at 103-104mph and he 05's usually trap at 100mph flat, and run slower times. actually oh wait nevermind, i remember now. 05's can't be reved higher then 5000 rpm or 5500 rpm or something like that, so you guys are losing out on the take off.

Yeah man, good run and happy b'day. Even if he was cool, I still like it how you beat him when he asked you if you ready to get spanked. Gotta love showing people up.

Re: Toasted a modded WRX

Awsome kill man. A base moddel WRX is quite easy to make significantly faster. a friend of mine removed all his cats and put 3 inch pipeing all the way through along with a tune and he jumped from 170 whp to 240 whp.

I would get murdered by an RS i heard they are a nice chunk faster then the standered evo, and my Srt-4 runs right with a stock evo.

for mitsubishi to save money on warrannteed clutch jobs ( which they don't bother to cover anyways ) they make it that when the clutch is depressed, you can't rev it higher then 5000 rpm so that you don't kill the clutch as fast. the ideal launching rpm is around 5.5-6K

a stock wrx will run a 14.1 and trap at 93mph with a perfect driver. its trap speed is really low though so a RSX type S can run almost even with them stock on the highway. bolt ons on a WRX can easily gain another 30whp. but thats with everything, including a ecu piggy back with more aggressive tuning, removing your cats, turbo back, up pipe, down pipe, and larger intercooler. a stock EVO will still kill it though since htye trap at 103-104mph range. thats 10mph faster. also stock for stock they put out around 50 more whp then a stock WRX. so even with bolt ons, its not goin to be a evo on the highway, you'll still see his taillights but your not goin to pass one unless the guy behind the wheel of the evo is a clown.

Re: Toasted a modded WRX

my friend with the wrx can barely drive stick (his last car was a automatic legacy), but my evo friend has had his car for a while, so he's good.

i wonder how my car will do against the wrx, i'm sure it will trap higher at the very least.

edit: sorry for the bench racing.

Re: Toasted a modded WRX

Evos are prettier anyways, it seems like wrx's have too much going on on the outside IMO. And i've read that evos are better from a roll....i'd take either of them....or both..ya know not to sound too modest..

Dunno what to tell you, I only quote what works for me from experience. Some people prefer the dump of the clutch, as it fries less of the clutch then the slipping the clutch. I use to practice regularly, and I know that revving the car repeatedly spools the turbo. This is akin to what alot of Supra owners do with large turbos. Anyways, try whatever method works best for you Steiner.
