Talking Dropping Tranny!!

Hey all.

Asmost of you know Im working on my exhuast right now, and I decided to install it myself with the help of my friend who goes to UTI. They have a open garage on the weekends when you can go and work on your car with professional ASE certified instructors. So, I decided that Im going to save all those crappy labor charges from a mechanic, and do it myself at UTI. I was talking with my friend and we started talking about transmissions. Mine has a hairline crack in the housing at the very top, right under the intake. All the places that I went to want to charge $250 to drop the tranny, then the cost of parts and of course the hourly labor charges.

So, he was lke, "we can take it to UTI and drop it ourselves. Then we can weld it ourselves too. Depending on how mnay people and all, it could take 2 hours at most to do." So i was like, if I drop it, I might as well do work.

So I now I realize I shouldve given a cliff-note version, but Im not going to delete an of it.

So, since Im going to be dropping the tranny, I want to replace the clutch and flywheel. I want a lightweight (10lb) flywheel, and a stage 1 clutch. Should I also get a pressure plate? The thing with the fingers? So I need one? The tranny got 85,000 miles on it. Manual.

Ive been trying to find some flywheels. Where can I get some? Good companies? Prices? and any information I need to know? Also, is it 6 bolt, or 7 bolt?

Clutches I think I can find one good. Know about those already.

Any insight would be great. Im a noob at heart, so please help. THANKS A MILLION. (Ill have a BBQ at my place for anyone that helps )

Re: Dropping Tranny!!

a lighter flywheel isn't always better. the flywheel was meant to be a rotating mass and smoothen out the engine revolutions. a lighter flywheel will mean less rotating motion and it will cause rougher clutch engages. try finding a stock one that has been resurfaced for the clutch you want.

Re: Dropping Tranny!!

I dont mind rougher clutch engagments. Not a big deal for me. Where can I find redone clutches?

if you have the stock 2g turbo motor or the 1g 93-94 motor it will be a 7-bolt. if you have done a 90-92 6-bolt swap you need the 6-bolt flywheel.

EDIT> i'm an idiot, i thought you had a turbo for a second. you'll need to find the stock 420a flywheel which isn't the 6 or 7 bolt turbo flywheel.

Re: Dropping Tranny!!

you'll have to find one made specifically for the 95-99 eclipse/talon non-turbo motor. that's the only one that will work unless there are others that are interchangeable, but i doubt it.
