Question Engines

I have a 1993 chevrolet caprice classic with 5.0L and it has a funny smell when I turn the car off. It seems as if it is burning oil or something. I went under the car the other day and changed out my starter and saw lots of oil deposit on the oil pan and transmission case. I don't know if there is a leak or what. I don't want to put leak stop in the engine because that isn't fixing the problem. Who knows how to rebuild engines or fix parts and can explain it to me so that I can get a substitute engine for a while and rebuild this one.

instead of rebuilding your present motor and droping in a substitute, you would be better off buying another 5.0 l and rebuilding that, it would be easier and save you alot of work

what kind of hp are you planning on getting out of it, and if you have never rebuilt an engine before you may be qetting yourself into something you cannot handle, price it out, find out how much a already rebuilt motor is, and how much it would be to have a professional do it, hopefully ive been some help

I had same problem with 92 caprice classic 305. Seems these engines are prone to intake manifold gasket leaks at rear of manifold. Thought engine had rear main seal leak. It was caused by crankcase overpressurization. That was caused by PCV port on throttle body was clogged up with carbon. Also it made car run slightly like crap. If taking manifold off be sure to take throttle body off and clean real good.

Re: Engines

Before you go and get a new engine, get your intake manifold gasket changed and get both your valve cover gaskets changed. Oil leaking from these two locations will run down your engine and blow towards the back making everything under the bottom of your car oily. It will also smell like oil is cooking when you stop because oil has blown on to your tail pipe. After you get those gaskets changed, go and pressure wash, at a car wash and use some GUNK Engine cleaner you can get it at Wal mart or a part store, your engine and under the bottom of the engine where the oil has leaked. Then check back under there in a couple of days to see if the oil is still leaking down there.

I personnaly havn't had problems with the 305 engines, I have a few with 150K or more. The 350 is another matter. My 1990 P.I. at 50k had the rings go, and it started burning oil, the valve seals also went, must have been an old engine they put in the car new, as I was the original owner.
I just had a 5.7l Vortec rebuilt for $1,500.00 . Was bored out, new crank,( I spun a bearing and wore the crank down 1/4 inch) cam, lifters rod, and heads. Will let you know how it runs when I finish getting it put in.
