Weird transmission problem...

Hey everyone. My name is Chris. I have a weird problem with my transmission that I've never come across before. I own a 1996 Chevy Blazer with the 4.3L engine and I'm not sure if that vintage used either the 700R4 or the 4L60 transmission...but, the problem I am having, is that I notice that the breather has quite a bit of trans. fluid that is soaked up the square foam piece at the top and it seems that the fluid is now making it's way down to the exhaust and is burning it on the pipes. I thought I would "limp" it home 10 miles from my place and before I did that, I thought I would check the fluid and I was a pint low, so I topped it off and was on my way. I thought I might as well leave the trans. in Drive and not in Overdrive, being that the torqueconverter wasn't locking up to save on the heat. But, on my way home, I thought I should shift it into OD and see if the t/c was locking up, but when I tapped the brake to see if it did indeed shift out, I didn't notice anything...if it was unlocking, I couldn't feel it. So, I shifted it back out of OD. The whole way home, I could smell burning trans. fluid on the exhuast and I lost (again) about a pint of fluid. If SOMEONE could help me out and give a responce or ask more questions, it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks again.

Re: Weird transmission problem...

Have you had any service done lately to the transmission?

How are you checking the fluid level?

Re: Weird transmission problem...

Where is the fluid spewing out of?

Are you checking the fluid with the transmission running in park?

Almost sounds like a clogged filter.

Go through all the gears holding in each gear for 3 seconds all the way down to 1 and back up to park.

Check the fluid in park.

Do you have a tranny cooler?

The fluid must've been spit up through the fill tube.

I think there is a vent on the transmission.

Can anyone back that up?

Angry same problem here

I am having the same problem with my tranny (95 blazer). I asked Eagle transmissions in syracuse,NY and they told me it could be one of two problems. 1. broken internal part. or 2. pump is not pumping fluid and fluid is overheating.

I rebuilt the tranny in my 88 blazer a while back. Rebuild kit was only $125. BUT....I had to replace the pump. You'd prolly be better off replacing the whole tranny if it is the pump. The pump alone cost $850 from the dealer. Guy at the dealer told me he could sell me a complete "remanufactured" tranny with 50k warranty for $1150. $300 more for the complete tranny with a new pump than for just the pump alone. Outrageous huh. Needless to say I didn't buy one from the dealer. Got a rebuilt one (which I don't know how you can call it "rebuilt" cause there is hardly anything to rebuild) from a local repair shop for $120

I had the same problem with my trans in my 93. I was told it was that the pump in the trans was worn out. I still used the truck with it leaking for like 4 months. Then I needed it to tow a project car home, I changed the trans filter with a filter from fram and did a full fuild change before I left. After a 2000 mile trip (1000 miles towing a car), It didn't leak once. Check your t-case fuild, mine was over full like the trans was leaking into the t-case (the vent for the trans and the vent for the t-case are connected together). Change your filter and check your fuild levels first, then see.

Re: Weird transmission problem...

Hey Guys Check your transfercase fuild level I bet its over full! the input seal on the transfer case goes bad and lets fuild get into the transfer case pull the T-case and replace the seal.

Re: Weird transmission problem...

I've noticed the same thing happening to my 97 LS 120K Trans fluid still looks good, but I want todo a complete service. How do I get all of the fluid out of the tranny when I do the filter change. and how much does the tranny take to fill it up?

thanks
JKdon
