Opinions needed about a GTA

Okay, as the subject line says, I need some of your opinions about a GTA my neighbor has offered to sell me. He wants $3000 for it, which I thought was an awesome deal. He showed me around, let me check it out, the normal look see. It has all power options, and the interior has been completely redone. It even has corvette seats. Basically, the interior is immaculate. As for the body, it does needs some good work done to it. It looks like the whole right door will need to be replaced, at least that what he said. the damage on it looks like the door opened up all the way, 180* to where it came incontact with the fender. So that the inner part of the door got all crunched up. I'm not sure if that's repairable or not? But it doesn't look all the bad. The only other thing wrong with the body is that it needs a paint job, a new left tail light, and preferably a new rear spolier. The spoiler it has on it, the thick bulky rubber one, is all beat up looking. The guy told me that he had a friend who could get me a fiberglass one put on if I wanted.

As for the engine.. The odometer reads 177k miles. But, the guy swears up and down that the engine the car has in it, is (1) not the original engine or (2) was rebuilt. And that whatever was done to the engine, was done by the previous owner before him. He said that he's taken the car to several mechanics and they claimed it was rebuilt or a newer engine, because it ran way too good to be the original with 177k miles. Does that sound like a b/s story? Well, he popped the hood, which btw.. the hood opened up pretty weird. The left side opened up fine, but the right side wasn't wanting to opened up any further, he kind of had to shake it open. So that looks like another thing that will need to be looked at. But once I saw the engine, my jaw dropped. It looked pristine, not one spec of dirt on it at all. I forgot to mention the engine is a 305 TPI with an automatic tranny.

The only other problem the guy told me the car had was that the cruise control wasn't working. I forgot what he said was wrong with it, but I'm not too concerned with it as of right now. I'm going to try to get some pictures of it asap, I didn't have time to take any because I met the guy at the gas station up the road and was complimenting him on the car. That's when I found out he lived right near me. So yeah, if any of you could throw your opinions and/or suggestions this way, I'd appreciate it.

Re: Opinions needed about a GTA

if it needs a new door/fenders those can be found at a local scrapyard, if your prepared to pay for a new paint spray then i'd say its worth it.. the hood is most likely the hinges/improper allignment.. as for the story on the engine its hard to tell if its b.s or not... take it for a spin and see how the throttle feels

Re: Opinions needed about a GTA

What year is it? The 305's are a blast with the manual transmission, and have a fair amount of options to make it better. The spoiler thing is a chronic problem, I don't know why pontiac opted for those cheap rubber ones, I highly recommend getting a fiberglass one because the paint tends to yellow on rubber ones. Aside from that give it a drive and see how it feels.

Easy killers, lets try periods on for size. A run on sentence isn't fun to read.

Re: Opinions needed about a GTA

Well I just figure it would be a nice restoration job to do over the summer since I wont be in school. I wouldn't plan on keeping it, being that I live with my parents still and there would be nowhere to park it. So I figure I can finish fixing up the body, throw on a new paint job, and sell it. Just something to give me a little more experience with workin on cars.
