Re: '89 Z24i engine stalling

It could be one of the coils but alot of times it's just water in the gas. It will idle just fine because the fuel pump isn't sucking hard but as soon as you put stress on the system/accelerate the pump draws the water in. Try a couple of cans of gas dryer/dry gas. If that doesn't do it change your fuel filter. I would try these first. A lot cheaper than the coil/coils.

Re: '89 Z24i engine stalling

Did it start doing this all of a sudden or build up to it? Any lights or codes? Another item to check might be the fuel filter. It might have enough gas moving through it to idle okay, but when accelerated, it cuts out because the volume of gas isn't there.

I have an 89 with the 2.4 (same engine) with dual coils and plugs. There's only 1 intake valve and 1 exhaust valve for each cylinder in mine, so I would be surprised if it is one of the coils unless it is the one on the intake side for the compression stroke (left side facing the enigne), which to me, is the vital side. You could try switching the coil wires to see if that helps. If it doesn't it probably is not the coils. Coils probably not going to cut out due to acceleration. I would lean more to a fuel problem if the plugs are firing at idle....fuel pressure, fuel pump possibly, fuel filter. Also, inspect all vaccum lines/hoses well for cracks and broken lines. The lines on an 89 ought to be cracking and breaking by now.
