Tire Pressure Sensors

Can anyone explain how the Tire Pressure Monitors work on the 2001 Auroras? I had new tires installed they changed valve stems. The shop manual says they operate using speed sensors (same as traction control units).

Tire pressure is not monitored or measured. The system monitors rotations of each wheel by means of traction control/ABS sensors. If one wheel rotates faster over a period of time, the system assumes the air pressure in that tire is lower than the others, causing a shorter loaded radius.

Re: Tire Pressure Sensors

Thanks for your reply, when I saw they replaced valve stems I lower the air pressure to 15 lbs in one of the tires to see if DIC was working it didnt register low tire pressure even during 2 mile drive.
"It still shows tire pressure normal" not sure if it is operating properly or not.

When ever the car is off the ground and tires are spun independently, the warning trips. Once it is tripped it needs to be reset to work properly. To reset, scroll your display to the gauges section, then down to the tire pressure monitor screen. It should show the warning on the screen. Press and hold the reset button for about 5 seconds until the screen resets. Before driving, make sure your tires are properly inflated or it will go off again. As the last guy mentioned, the warning goes off when one tire spins at a different speed than the others which would be a result of the tire having less air and effectively being smaller (thus needing to spin faster to "keep up".

Take your car out to the freeway and drive it about 10 miles. It takes awhile to trigger the sensor. During city driving your wheels will always be turing at different speeds as you turn corners and such so take it out on long straight streches. Rear tires will also take a greater disparity in pressure to as the load on the rear of the car is less.
