Gear shift stuck in park\no brake lights

My gear shift will not move out of park car starts fine but my brake lights are also out. We checked the fuses they are fine we replaced the brake light bulbs. That didnt help either i heard that there was some sort of safety feature that did this?? Car is very well maintained only 60,000 miles and its a 1996...If anybody has any clue about this please help!!! id greatly appreciate it...thanks

Re: Gear shift stuck in park\no brake lights

Okay....this is a rather easy one. If you look under the driver's side dash you will see the brake pedal, naturally, follow it up to the linkage to the power booster and you SHOULD see a little clip on it with some wires running to it. If that is out your brake lights will not come on. When you press brake pedal it brings the sensor/clip together to complete the circuit for the brake lights to come on. Also that clip unlocks the catch for the trans or neutral safety switch.
