should i buy an ex-terra?

i am driving a 96 jimmy and well its breaking down and i will never be able to sell it. i like my jimmys shift on the fly but the ex-terra has a shifter for the 4x4. i heard that with the auto locking hubs i just shift it into 4x4 first thing before i go then it will be shift on the fly. is this true? what else should i look for in a used ex-terra? any common problems i shoul look for? hows it on gas? do you need to use premium gas into the supercharged ex-terras?

Re: should i buy an ex-terra?

First off its an XTERRA and not like an ex girlfriend....Yeah you can shift into 4wd if you are moving but I would not do it if you were moving more than 20 or so. They are Very reliable, gas mileage is similar to most other SUV's and yes you do need to use premium with a supercharged version.

Re: should i buy an ex-terra?

Once the hubs are engaged you can switch betwen 4-hi and 4-low at 50mph or under. Look for cracked exhaust manifolds (especially on one out of warranty). You can do a search to learn ALL about that common problem. There are a few recalls you can check on as well (search for "recall" here).

The premium fueled Xterra isn't really worth it IMO as you only get a 40hp gain and not until up in the higher RPR range. But with gas prices going through the roof I'm sure you can find more than a few people trying to unload them. If you really want more power, pick up the uglier '05 Xterra.

The rear hatch is a maintainence problem and requires cleaning unless it was left unattended. Search the board for "rust & hatch". the early models are made from Durasteel which is very resistant to rust. I think after 2002 you're SOL. Any rust down below the sheet metal is normal and inconsequential as it's thick steel that is not going to suffer.

Re: should i buy an ex-terra?

I'd like to make a clarification.
Per Nissan, shift between 2H-4H below 25 mph
While in 4L, never go over 30 mph
To shift between 4H-4L, stop truck(MT model) then 4H-4L
To shift between 4H-4L, stop truck, transmission to "N" (AT model) then 4H-4L

No significant changes for 2001.

Anything that can be said about tire fitment has already been said here, PLEASE take the time to research such a basic question.

cool, can you give the "use the search" bullshit a rest for a while? it is not like this board sees 500 posts a day.

Re: should i buy an ex-terra?

Hmm, let's see here... The board admin suggested searching twice in this thread alone.
Need more examples, here's a search query that will find a lot:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...earchid=924056

Here's one particularly relevant example:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=168390

So nyah!

Oh I see, the admin already told him to search. So what was the point of your post? To pad your post count? To be a dick? Nice to see you have not changed in the four years since this BB started.
