Intermittant Seat Belt Light and Clock, trip counter reset on their own!

My car: 3 Door, 1.8 GTI 125bhp, 1998

Problem: Recently, when I have been going out to my car usually after say 8 hours of inactivity, I get into the car and the clock time, average mileage, trip counter, etc have all reset themselves to ZERO.

I reset the time and everything works normally, I leave the car and come back, and again everything has reset to ZERO.

Also, the Yellow seat belt reminder light is permanantly ON - it used to extinguish after approx 3 seconds.

Initially, thought low car battery, but the vehicle stills cranks over and starts ok.

Does anyone know if a seperate battery is used for the above functions, or have any idea why these problems could be happening???

Help is much appreciated.

My guess is ignition switch.
