want to end this problem

Hey all, I've posted a good bit on my car cutting out but i thought it was all in the past, and i shouldn't have because its back again,
The garage said they put a new clutch in my car to stop the engine cutting out because they thought it was putting too much stress on the engine. The car now idles higher as a result of getting the new clutch in
This morning was driving along at 60mph and noticed a loss of power, that usually starts this problem off, then it started kicking but was still going at 60, then i noticed it starting to slow down and eventually i had to pull off, the car just kept cutting out on idle and when i tried to rev but not if i kept pumping the gas pedal, eventually i got it sorted, after 15 mins of high reving and driving, however my friend told me that in his car, it started doing that, its a totally different make though, and there was no oil, checked the oil this morning just after it cut out and there looked to be very little, untill i waited like 5 min and it was mostly back there.
What could be this problem? Its a 91 civic DX 1.3, single carb, its had the carb reconditioned, new clutch, dis and rotor, and plugs etc

Re: want to end this problem

maybe fuel filter or fuel pump, make sure you have a good spark, sounds like a fuel or spark problem or something weird is goin on, it can take the oil a little bit to all run back into the oil pan, but if the oil is real black and kinda thick then change it everyonce and a while. About every 3000 miles or so.

Re: want to end this problem

i'm with him, lisen to your fuel pump see if it is shutting off. I had an 1985 honda that had an exsternal fuel pump and when it stated going bad it clicked. The car would run and when it got hot it would try to stall. I would have to keep my foot on the gas. Then if it did stall it would take a little time before it woul start again. I would have to hold down the gas then pump it. I would start there. Change the pump and the filter.

Re: want to end this problem

Have you checked your ECU for codes?

From your description of the problem it could be a lot of things, but I had the same symptoms when my dizzy went bad.

Re: want to end this problem

like everyone is saying it could ne a number of things, just start with the easy things to get to and rule them out and if it turns out to be easy to get to it's an easy fix, check your relays and fuses too, there is a relay for the fuel pump and fuse too, so start w/ the easy stuff and then go from there.

I take it from your post that you have a '91 dx. It is actually a 1.5liter engine and it has dual point fuel injection which LOOKS a lot like a carb but trust me it is not. The symptoms you describe could mean any number of things. Most likely it is as a result of your ecu going into limp mode which happens when the engine is experiencing some other kind of malfunction. For us to get a better idea of your problem we need for you to check your ecu for codes which is located underneath the passenger side carpeting. Count the number of blinks before each long pause and report back to us. This is done with the ignition turned on!

Hey guys, no the DX here is a 1.3 single carb, theres no LX so they call it DX, Last night was the worst, normally the car will start working fine after about 15-20 min of trying to make it rev, but it wouldnt after 1.30 hours so just had to tow it.
I can hear a clunking from back of the car sometimes but it is getting enough fuel, prehaps too much? i think its having trouble burning it sometimes it will idle ok and then try to give it revs and the whole thing cuts out, all the fuses are ok, the garage has replaced the dis cap and rotor, when i got home though it was ok, just a little rough though with a putter or something from the exhaust
Could it be that the carb is able to go off setting and then re adjust its self? but went to a carb specialist and they said it was just dirty, also had my fuel filter replaced and been using that STP stuff

There's something you aren't telling us. If it is a 91 then it IS a 1.5L and it IS fuel injected. Honda did not make a carbed motor in 91. It could be an 81 however with a 1.3L carbed setup which is not my area of expertise or this boards.

If it is in fact a 91 then follow the procedure I outlined above for checking your ecu. Remember its behind the metal plate and it has a little circular window in it where the led will blink.

If it is in fact a 81 then your post needs to be moved to the correct forum.

If you do not follow our advise then you are BEYOND help. Go ahead and have the shop change your muffler bearings for you even though that would obviously not be your problem and they are obviously fucking you up the ass because they don't know how to work on your car.

Edit:
Does your car look like this 81 civic

Or does it look more like this 91 civic

Re: want to end this problem

Oh shit i did not see that. They did not have a carb motor in 91. You should have 2 injectors. Now the TB does kinda look like a carb but it's not. Just sucky DPFI.

But like i said, it's your fuel man!!!

It is a 91 Civic, EDM model, the engine is D13B1, SOHC single carb, chassic EC8, i think it calls it the LX on civic4g but its acutally the DX here in Ireland because the LX does not exist
Its impossible for it to be fuel considering that it has been happening on and off since september 2004, the garage ruled out that posibility before they refused to do any more servicing on it because it was 'not worth their while'
Was going up to college today, started fine and was running fine, maybe a little sluggish but nothing really noticable, after about 7 miles, started spluttering untill i couldnt keep it going any longer, was idling ok but not accelerating,
Drove it home eventually and it was cutting out on idle but ok on acceleration, now its just idling quite rough, and the idle should be noticably higher. Its getting spark to all cylinders even though it sounds like its not firing on all cylinders, put new spark plugs in too, can smell unburnt petrol

Re: want to end this problem

i think its your carb because you say it runs good when its cold but when it warms up it starts to mess up. the carb does have that cold start fuel enrichment, maybe when its warmed its not switch over causing maybe overfueling. idk much about carb adjustments. check all your vacuum lines to the carb, make sure theres no rip in the lines, a vacuum leak essentially

I retract my previous statements then. To be honest I have never heard of anyone with that engine or even heard it mentioned in my 3 years of honda existance, thanks for the link to that site though because I probably still wouldn't have believed you otherwise. I thought we here in the US were the only ones that got the shitty engines but it looks like you guys have it even worse.

My current recommendation is that you check your timing if indeed you are getting fuel and spark to all cylinders and that all vacuum lines are good.

BTW your clutch would have nothing todo with the problem just FYI.

turns out there was a faulty wire going to the solenoid on the side of the carb, nothing to do with the ignition at all
