Hi all... got a few Q's for the jeep guru's (TSi)

Well personally I am a DSM guy... but my wife has a 1998 grand cherokee TSi and I had a few questions for any other AWD'ers.

1: Is there any common problems that most of the TSi's have?

2: After you come to a stop and put it in park... about 10-30 seconds later with the engine off there is kind of a low clunk sound.... it did it while I was underneath looking for the supposed crack in the transfer case the guy that changed her oil last said there was.... I saw no mentioned crack... but I did see the transfer case and all connected to it...driveshafts and tranny... budge slightly when it made the sound.
A friend of mine said this was something called "mopar clunk" lol I have heard that saying before and always chuckled....
If I grab either drive shaft going to front or rear there is no play.. well a bit but VERY minimal...

3: since it is AWD all the time I assume there is a differential in the front? when at slower speed like pulling into a parking space/wheels turned it seems kinda like it is binding... same feeling as if you have 4 hi locked in on a dry surface... my old bronco II had kinda the same feeling if I put it into 4hi/lo on dry surface.. I know your not supposed to do that..... no lectures!!!! lol Is this common or a sign of something wrong with the front end?

The jeep runs great and drives nice and smooth, shifts nicely and cruises nicely.... and my wife loves it...

Any help and suggestions on what to look for as in signs of bad things to come and what not would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Hi all... got a few Q's for the jeep guru's (TSi)

the tight feeling when turning is the viscous coupler in the diff. when it goes bad it will lock up the front instead of letting it slip. the clunk is the rear drive shaft binding up. then finally loosening and unloading the chassis. nothing to worry about, just annoying. but the front viscous coupler can wear your front tires out faster. the solution is replacing it.

Is the viscous coupler an easier task that I could tackle? Or is it a thing you would want a shop to do? I've heard of them but never done it.. always willing to try new stuff...
Just off the top of your head how much are the couplers?
Thanks msrjeep!!

Search the forum. Someone at one point had posted a link to a DIY site that showed how to do this in the vehicle.

Re: Hi all... got a few Q's for the jeep guru's (TSi)

You're the one looking for the information. I don't have that post bookmarked so it was either you look for it, or me. I was just letting you that the information is out there to replace the VC with the TC in the vehicle, saving you some work. Guess I should have just kept my mouth shut.

Besides, if you had actually done a search, you would have seen at least some of the hundreds of posts on the issue...some of them even answer the price question and a better solution to the whole problem.

It was originally. It used to stand for Turbo Sport Intercooled on the Talon, but then they just made it into another meaningless set of letters to throw on a car.A TSI grand is like a laredo but it had a purple pin stripe on the gray body claddings.

Re: Hi all... got a few Q's for the jeep guru's (TSi)

and it has all the inside full trim fun stuff...kinda like a "eddie bauer edition" kinda thing.... power everything...heated seats...roof console thingy for outside temp, mpg average and actual... bla bla bla
pretty nice.... now i'm adding another TSi to the family with a 97 talon TSi AWD 6bolt engine swap fully rebuilt w/evoIII16G turbo, 550cc injectors, S-AFC, greddy profec-b spec 2 boost controller, FMIC... gonna be one hell-of-a fast DSM...pimp shit all the way...

Yes steve I did a search and found some info but just wanted to know if someone here had done it and about how easy it was for them and also a general cost for parts.... Thanks for the help.

Oh yeah... ha ha ha for your link to the bike... actually the TSi is the AWD version of the jeep GC

Re: Hi all... got a few Q's for the jeep guru's (TSi)

Actually, TSi and the limited shared the Quadra Trac system as standard equip, which was an option on the Loredo. The Limited also has full heated leather, overhead console with trip and temp etc. and a few more toys the TSi didn't have. So to say "the TSi is the AWD version of the GC" would be incorrect.
