Re: transmission problems

Is it the original transmission or a rebuilt one? I had a '67 with original trans that popped out of gear in 4th, I tightened all trans mounts (rear and nosecone) and I think I remember changing the rear mounts (it's been 20+ years) and changed the gear oil. That fixed it for me, good luck.

Re: transmission problems

My gear oil is full and my mounts are all brand new, it still just pops out of gear. Any other ideas? what is the linkage? could that have anything to do with it?

Check your shift coupler, you can find it under your rear seat, remove the tunnel cover, and you'll see it. Make sure the rubber is in good condition, if you're not sure, just replace it, cause it's pretty cheap. removal and installation skill level from 1-10 requires a 2. Is there a lot of play in the shifter? that would be one indicator of a coupler going out. The original ones had rubber between 2 metal pieces, but you can get an upgrade that is all metal w/ rubber inside I believe, not very expensive, but will last way longer, especially if you crank on that shifter.
If that's all good, then call "Old Speed" in Paramount, CA the guys there are really cool and helpful.

Re: Re: transmission problems

Dear all,

Seems like i m having the same problem as trooperbrett. I ma a new beetle lover and after changing the transmission oil, the 4th gear jumps to neutral when i press the accelerator harder. The mechanic suggest that the whole transmission has to be changed. I m asking him to chang the rear mounts and check the shift coupler.

Anyone can give me any other suggestions as of what could be the problem ( a cheaper option perhaps, compared to changing the whole transmssion)

Please help

Re: transmission problems

Had the same problem on my 72 super, but was second gear during exceleration. Rebuilt the trans and found it had a bad gear inside.
