For some time now, I have been hearing this clanking noise that appears to be coming from under the vehicle. I only hear the noise when going over bumps at about 25mph or more, & it sounds like metal to metal contact!
I tried tightening bolts under the vehicle (control arms etc.), but nothing seemed loose! The Jeep rides fine & everything functions as it should, I just can't pin point where this clanking noise is coming from? The clanking sound is not loud, & can hardly be heard with the radio on! Any ideas??? |

The sway bar links make a clanking noise when going over bumps when they get worn. They have a ball and socket type and wnen they wear can make a lot of noise.

Re: Clanking Noise From Undercarriage?
I would say the noise is coming from the rear end of the Jeep, maybe the middle, but not the front.
I recently installed new front stabilizer bar links (JKS) & I keep them well lubed, no problems there. |

Re: Clanking Noise From Undercarriage?
check the exhaust, My muffler spun a lil and was cocked sideways and was hitting, whenever I would hit bump. Go down through the whole exhaust system check all the hangers.

Re: Re: Clanking Noise From Undercarriage?
Check out the Catalytic Converter. It makes a clanky noise when it gets old. You can verify by turning on the car, have someone put it in gear (while holding the brake) and hit it a little. You'll hear that its loose inside. You can find them online for around $90 ish and pay about $50 to install.

Re: Clanking Noise From Undercarriage?
Did you figure out the problem with the clanking? I have the same issue with my 04 Grand Cherokee.

Re: Clanking Noise From Undercarriage?
shake the exhaust line up down left right and front to back im sure its clanking on a bar just before the gas tank thats happens when your muffler or the catalitic converter begin to leave. and have a look for a broken coil spring and inspect gas shock too

Re: Clanking Noise From Undercarriage?
Unfortunately, I can't recall what was causing the noise. If it comes back to me I'll be sure to post back.

Re: Clanking Noise From Undercarriage?
My '02 started a bad clanking on bumps randomly one morning. On a hunch and based on how the sound was, I sat on the ground on the passenger side and kicked my shoe quickly against the side of the muffler a few times. That was over a year ago and no more noise. I'll bet the exhaust hangers had just shifted a bit. Sometimes the simple fixes work...
