Question over the border sales

Hey guys-

I've found a buyer for my 95 GS.
I live just south of the canadian border, and he lives just north of it.
I was wondering if anybody knew if there was some sort of process I have to go through in order to sell it "internationally", or if I just drive it across the bridge to his house, take off the plates and registration, and get a ride back. I just wouldnt want to get fined for some law I didnt know about.

Thanks in advance.

Re: over the border sales

you just give him the title and then its his problem, he has to pay the duty on it, however, you might want to send the money back to yourself via the mail because i believe you're not allowed to carry over US$4000 over the border

Re: over the border sales

Hello!

Glad to see that people know me as Canadian :-) I do a lot of cross border transport with car parts and all that kind of stuff because I am only one hour from the US border, so I have stuff shipped to a warehouse and go pick it up.

All you have to do is sell it to the Canadian. He will need certain documents from you or the manufacturer. He will need proof that all recalls have been sercived or equivalent and that it is totally road worthy in the US. After you help him out with any documents that he needs, he is on his own.

He will have to let the Canadian Customs know that he is bringing it accross with at least 24 hours worth of notice and then have all the proper documentation there. He will also have to notify the US Customs within 72 hours that a vehicle is being exported. Once he is in Canada he will have one month to complete a out of province inspection, and have all the necessary repairs (or modifications, such as the speedo) to the car. He will also have to pay GST of 7% and if the car was made outside of North America he will have to pay duty.

Check this website to see if the vehicle is admissable into Canada: http://www.riv.ca/english/US_vehicle_admissibility.pdf

And check this website on exactly what is needed/required by the Canadian Government or Customs Agency: http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html

And you are allowed to take up to $10,000 over the border in cash, money order, cheques, or equivavlent without any issue. Other than that I believe all they have to do is document it. However, I would suggest that he come down there and pick it up, because you can not bring it accross for him.

Most importantly is to just be nice to the border guards and honest. Just tell them that "hey, your the boss, I want to be sure to do this totally correct and by the book, just let me know what I need to do."

For the most part they are nice, but then there are some real wankers. Be sure to have ALL of the documents needed and if they say that the need originals then they NEED ORIGINALS. I was trying to help out a guy that was importing a truck from Arizona, and just because he didnt have an original copy of one document (he had a copy) they didnt let him bring it accross until he got it. Now, this is exceptional, as most people will let you go accross, but just to let you know what can happen.

There is more to importing a vehicle than you think. Just be sure that you have all your bases covered for exporting, I am not sure what the US government requires, if anything for export, but I am sure that they will need something.
