Re: 98 Pontiac grand am brakes
How many miles are on your car and what year? It sounds like the brakes are dragging and are causing premature wear. There is absolutely no reason that you should need to replace the pads every 6 months on a grand am unless you are really doing a tremendous amount of city driving and then that doesn't justify the replacements especially the rear pads. I have a Grand Prix GTP and the rear pads weren't replaced until 120k and they were still good.
Have the calipers checked and make sure you don't have a lot of runout on the rotors that is causing the pads to wear prematurely. As for good pads, Performace Friction Carbon Metallics or Raybestos with D3EA stopping compound. Good Luck! |

Re: 98 Pontiac grand am brakes
Thanks for the info. Like I said I think the calipers are handing up and causing the premature wear. You may end up either replacing or rebuilding them but if you don't you will continue to eat pads and eventually the rotors will fail too. Remans are the way to go. They are about half the cost of new ones and come with a guarantee.

Re: 98 Pontiac grand am brakes
I agree with the DAD, no good reason to replace pads that fast. Something is wrong to wear them out so fast. Even if you a heavy last-second to the light, stomp the brakes on driver.
Have the calipers aqnd rotors checked out. Taking the calipers off, is really not too hard. Pull the wheel, pull two bolts, remove the brake line, ya good. Rotor just pulls off after caliper removed [rotor is held in place by wheel and caliper without any bolts]. The boltsw require a special hex-head or Torx-bit socket, available any auto-parts store, I believe they are in the "50" size. |
