LS crank lacks clearance in GSR Block

So I read somewhere that I could stroke a GSR block slightying using an LS crank and rods...

I just set the crank in the block today to plasti-gauge it, and the counter weights on the crank hit the farking Oil Jets!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I was thinking of possibly trying to bend the nozzle's on the jets out of the way of the crank, but I forsee several issues with this.

1. I might crease or break the copper nozzle. Anyone know a good way to bend short lengths of very small copper pipe? >.<

2. The jets appear to be aimed at the centers of the cylinders. If I bend the nozzles they'll be aimed almost toward the tranny side of the cylinder walls. Anyone know how much this will interfere with their intended purpose?

To add to my disappointment, I found a gouge deep enuf to catch my finger nail when I run it over the cylinder wall. It runs the entire length of the #2 cylinder. The block has already been bored to match my pistons.

I can take other pics if anyone wants.

Re: LS crank lacks clearance in GSR Block

Can you take a pic of teh crank in the block and the counter weight touching the oil jet. That is weird I have never heard of a clearance problem with the LS crank and oil jets. Did you have the bearings in? And how much room would it need to clear the oil jets?
Also that scratch is terrible I can see it in the pic, I think that the machine shop should fix it for free but you will end up boring all the cylinders out a little more, then you will have piston problems. Hmm what size bore did you go with?

Re: Re: LS crank lacks clearance in GSR Block

Yes the main bearings were installed. Two of the counterweights have a bevelled edge and so they barely hit the jets. However 2 of them are not bevelled on the side, and they hit the jets even on the leading edge (I would have to bend them substantially to clear).

I had it bored to 81.5mm to match my pistions. I really didn't want to go further than that, as I think it will weaken the cylinder walls. With the reduced rod to stroke ratio using the LS crank, I'm already putting extra pressure on the walls than a stock GSR.

I forgot to mention in the first post, that I saw the scratch on the cylinder before it was machined, I just fiugred the machine shop would let me know if it was a problem. Before it was bored, the scratch was plain as day.

Re: LS crank lacks clearance in GSR Block

I took my block back to the machine shop, and the machinist said not to worry about it. He said that little scratch won't make any difference, so I'm crossing my fingers.

As far as the crank, I think I'm going to get a gsr crank and rods. I'll then have the clearance I need, and a little better rod to stroke ratio (1.58 instead of 1.54). Anyone need a balanced and micropolished LS B18a (89mm stroke) crank and never used LS Eagle Rods? >.<

Re: Re: Re: LS crank lacks clearance in GSR Block

$280 shipped for the New Eagle LS rods. That saves you roughly $30 over best deal I found on ebay, since the box is open. This includes the ARP bolts and lube just as it came from Eagle.

$150 shipped for the Balanced and Polished Crank. That won't even cover the machine work and shipping, but I know I've got to take a loss on machine work. The machine work was done by Schnell Automotive, and highly respected engine builder in Portland, OR. They've been in business for over 50 years, and do really nice work.

My ebay ID is Hwarang76 if you wanna check out my feedback. I can post more pics of anything specific if you are seriously interested.

Re: Re: Re: Re: LS crank lacks clearance in GSR Block

Udate: I showed the scratch to my machinist. It's only deep enuf to catch my fingernail at the bottom toward the crank, the rest of it is very shallow, so he said not to worry about it at all. Apparently he did see it, but just forgot to mention it to me. I's so happeh!
