Ignition Switch Problem.....Help...
My 1994 SL1 ignition switch takes the key and allows me to turn it to start the engine ok but when I turn it off it won't let the key come back out.....it has a standard trans and does seem to have to be in any particular gear to allow the key to be removed, I am at the point now that I have to grab the key with small vice grips wiggle the crap out of it while pulling on it to get it out this is a newly made key,....is the ignition wore out or?......I just got the car a week ago..... I have sprayed it with wd-40 witout any help....any ideas?....how does the switch come out? Fred

The newly made key may be at fault, but not too likely.
But BTW, WD-40 is not made for locks, it is for hinges/chains/other moving parts (I know it says it will free stuck bolts/locks/etc, thats if they are rusted)... but trust me (I have some experience locksmithing), next time get graphite lubricant. At one point I didn't know any better either, but WD-40 will collect grime/dirt/dust and not allow the pins inside the lock to move as easily. Some quotes from other threads about the same problem, Quote:
Quote:
1. Disable air bags (if you got 'em) 2.disconnect (-) cable of battery 3.Remove knee protector and steering column cover screws 4.Seperate steering column cover halves, remove top half 5.You should see the cylinder release tab, With the key in ACC position, push the drivers side of the release tab towards the front of the vehicle wth a screwdriver, and pull the lock cylinder straight out 6. Get new lock cylinder and read these steps backward to install Or option 2 go to a shop and let them do the forementioned steps

Thanks for the info.....I am going to pull the lock cyl. out as I have most of that column apart now....it acts as though the prior owner did something to it to screw it up to the point of where it's at now....Thanks again for the info....Fred

To disable the air bag on steering do you just disconnect the battery or do I actually unplug the air bag wire?....If I unplug wire is it in the same general area as the cyl, turn sig. switch etc. under plastic cover?

To disable the airbag system,
put wheels straight ahead, take out your key, remove the air bag fuse from the I/P fuse box, disconnect the yellow 2 way connector at the base of the steering column, If you have a passenger side air bag, also remove the I/P pad (top of dash) and unplug the yellow 2 way connector there (goes to other air bag...). Dont turn the wheel while the system is disabled To enable the system when finished, plug both back in, put back in your fuse, turn ignition to "on" and make sure that the air bag light flashes 7 times Good Luck, MySatilac
