K&n filters are supposed to be "high flow" filters so im sure it will help out a little, probly not enough for you to tell though. It says it gives you horsepower on the box dont it? LOL

Re: new additions for 86 454
On my '86, I have the 6" high filter housing, and it's about 14" around. If yours was that big, I wouldn't expect to see much, if any, increase in anything. The big ones allow enough air flow that there's really no difference between the stock filter and no filter.

Re: new additions for 86 454
yeah my friend has a 420 horsepower 454 in his 86 silverado and he has an edelbrock intake on there and all the other stuff and he actually has a smaller air filter than my 350 does. his is about 3 inches tall and mine is 4 or 5 inches tall... so i bet it doesnt really matter all that much

The air cleaner housing wont make a real difference, Those K&N air filters are supposed to give you more horsepower but I really don’t know. Where did you get your housing and how much did it cost? I’m going to put an edelbrock one on my truck along with some edelbrock valve covers but I don’t know what stores carry Edelbrock.

Re: new additions for 86 454
everyone carries edelbrock, i know for sure that autozone does. the air filter housing is roughly 25 or 30 bucks i believe. valve covers are cheap too, unless you get ones with raised up lettering saying chevrolet and having a raised up bowtie on them, then its north of 100 bucks for em. also, a chrome crank case breather filter thing looks good too. if you want to go all out you can get chrome alternators and water pumps and timing chain covers and a performer intake manifold and chrome thermostat housing with aluminum hose coverings for the radiator hoses. i think they might even make chrome power steering pumps. also a chrome brake booser resivour thingy looks good in there. maybe a chromed up carb too... also oil pan and tranny pan and differential plates can all be chrome too. its probably pretty expensive to have all of that stuff, but it looks great
