Question A/C problem?!?

Hi all,

I have a 1991 Honda Civic Sedan with the factory A/C system. The A/C would run when I turn it on, but if I sit at a stop light and a car idles for too long, the compressor (or whatever component) would stop and the A/C would not come back on. This also happens when I drive too slow or fast (I think it's something to do with the engine compartment not getting enough air flow, slow driving; or engine working too hard, fast driving)

What component should I be checking to see if it needs replacing? Summer is coming and I live in GA....... I need help, fast!

Re: A/C problem?!?

try to add some freon to the sys. If it gets low it will not come on, in your case you may just barely be low which when your higher rpms it generates enough pressure in the line to let it kick on.

Is that something I can do on my own? Or do I have to be a certified mechanic to purchase freon and related parts?

Re: A/C problem?!?

get a kit from like autozone or walmart, you can buy the cans at walmart for a few bucks each - i did it the other day because my freon keeps leaking out, very easy to do

freon is very poisonous. i'd get that leak checked out asap and get it fixed, you shouldnt have passed a safety like that. also i know up here u cant buy freon. u need to have a certified technician re-charge your system.

Re: A/C problem?!?

i fit is 134-a you can buy it at walmart and do it your self they have a kit. If it is a R-12 sys then you have to have a license to purchse it but it goes in the smae way as the kit from walmart. If you know anyone that works on house hold ac and stuff they should have the same a/c gas that you have weather it be R-12 or 134-a but r-12 is much more expensive. If you have a leak i suggest to convert to 134-a so that if you have a leak in the future it dosn't cost an arm and a leg to refill the freon.
